The following message about some movements underway in Seattle is
being posted both to a discussion group of the Seattle Community
Network and to a "New Civ" mailing list of the Many-to-Many (M2M)
group, "Designing and Building New Civilizations." On World Wide
Web see "http://www.protree.com/worldtrans/newcivencino.html".
VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY - What is it? Does anyone in New Civ know
anything about "Voluntary Simplicity" as a movement?
The May 1995 isssue of "Esquire" magazine managed to adumbrate
the domain of Project Mentifex by featuring a Seattle coffee shop
called the "Honey Bear Bakery" (2106 N. 55th Street; Seattle, WA
98103; Tel 206-545-7296) where the toilers in the chipyards of AI
(artificial intelligence) meet over coffee and Stehekin bearclaws
to discuss building the minds of Andru-class robots.
A southwestern Public Broadcasting System television station
saw the Esquire article and proposed making a documentary on one
or the other of two phenomena much in evidence at the Honey Bear
in Seattle: the baby-boom "slackers" who either lack ambition in
life or are so snap-to-zenith ambitious that their doings are un-
fathomable; and the "Voluntary Simplicity" movement being taught
at workshops in Seattle by Ms. Cecile Andrews.
