As most of you probably are aware by now, there is a database of NCN
members that you can access from the member lounge area on the web from
http://www.newciv.org/worldtrans/newcivnet.html
I will add functions in there on an ongoing basis. Most recently I've added
member listings by geographical area, keyword searches of members, photos
of members where I found them available on the web, and more profile
information.
Some of you wish to stay relatively anonymous. Others wish as much
information as possible to be available. The database scheme should
accommodate both fairly well. There should basically be the information
available that you wish to make visible for other members.
Each of you should have received a Member ID and Password that allow you to
access the member lounge area and update your own information. If any of
you have for some reason not gotten this, just let me know and I'll make
sure you'll get it.
For the last month there has been an on-line form for joining NCN. That has
increased the inflow of new members, but possibly it might also mean that
there are new members that are less clear on what NCN is, or who expect it
to merely be another mailing list.
Let me make clear that NCN is not just a passive mailing list. It exists to
foster networking and cooperation amongst members, and to encourage synergy
and projects to emerge and develop in any way possible.
The NCN member database is currently administered as a set of programs on
Joachim Steingrubner's newciv.org server. However, the server is beginning
to be a bit overloaded and its Internet connection is sometimes down for
hours at a time. If any of you have server resources at your disposal that
might better house the NCN database, I would be very happy to hear from
you. The traffic on it is not very intense really, but it would be kind of
nice if it were always readily available.
