[from Lawry de Bivort. Further comments to ncndiscuss-l@newciv.org - Flemming]
Greetings, NewCivers
Flemming's initial posting on the possible need for mediation and
arbitration and the thoughtful posts that followed encourage me to offer
the following ideas:
1. Transactions between individual members of NCN should not be regulated
by NCN, for all the reasons members have suggested. I do think the idea
of a public rating of or commentary on services and goods would be useful.
2. But as part of creating a new civilization we can also consider the
tools we may want to provide ourselves with. And a mediation/arbitration
service, available at least to newciv members, might be an excellent tool
to begin with.
3. In addition to arbitration and mediation, we might also consider a
relationships counseling service. I have recently become painfully aware
of the tragic harm that can emerge from otherwise well-meaning, important
and promising relationships. Had counseling been rapidly available,
especially counseling from a transformational perspective, a genuine
tragedy might have been avoided.
4. If we decided these would be useful services to provide ourselves
with, we could do so with a fair degree of flexibility and informality.
For example, we could create a 'space' in newciv where those of us who
were willing to offer arbitration, mediation or counseling services would
post their willingness to do so. Each person could perhaps provide a
couple of short paragraphs describing the goals, assumptions, and ground
rules that they would use in his or her approach to arbitration,
mediation or counseling. People then desiring arbitration, mediation or
counseling could initially select the person they wanted to ask for help,
and contact that person directly and privately. The counselor and the
person(s) in need would then decide together whether to proceed and how.
5. I do not see NCN officially offering this service, or being responsble
for it, for obvious reasons.
I would be interested in helping with this, but would prefer to not be
the only one offering such help.
Best regards,
Lawry
