The WorldTrans/NewCiv.org server got hacked this afternoon. Both websites
and webserver software wiped out by a careless intruder.
It should almost be back to normal now, restored from a backup. However,
the NCN member database won't be up again before tomorrow. Some recent
changes need to be restored.
It just illustrates the fragile nature of Internet servers. Hopefully
things will be more secured soon so that it isn't likely to happen again.
In the counter-hacking department, luckily my friend Charles was on hand.
He had the intruder identified in about 10 minutes and managed to locate
him on the Net.
The fellow eventually confessed and apologized, after being presented with
the evidence of his actions. Offered to make up for it by helping to secure
the server. We declined that offer, though. Anyway, Charles is better
qualified to do that.
Let me know if you see anything that isn't working. Restoring a whole site
is not an entirely trivial thing.
