SOME IDEAS FOR CELEBRATING THE MILLENNIUM
"MILLENNIUM WEBSITE OF THE DAY" SERIES or perhaps a
"MILLENNIUM WEBSITE OF THE WEEK" SERIES
from New Year's 1999 through the end of the true final year of the 20th
Century and Second Millennium, 2000, highlighting the best Millennium-related
sites and, of course, projects and events.
Ideally, this would be an opening feature of one or more major ISPs (Internet
Service Providers such as AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy and Earthlink in the U.S.);
does anyone among you have any contacts at any of the major ISPs, on any
continent, and would like to suggest this idea to them?
This Millennium Website of the Day series might interact with or "pluck" items
from an online
MILLENNIUM WORLD MAP OF MILLENNIUM EVENTS, ORGANIZATIONS, PROJECTS, PLACES &
CITIES,
a dynamic colorful map of the globe which pinpoints every notable Millennium
"node" at its geographic location, hub or headquarters -- each of which is a
link to that project's or organization's website.
The Millennium Website of the Day series and Millennium World Map might be a
source of Millennium content for a
"MILLENNIUM MEGA-MINUTES" TV PSA AND WEBSITE SERIES
that runs from, say, the end of October 1998 [I wrote this in September;
sorry] through December 1999, or from the end of October 1999 through December
2000, of 60 of the most "universal"/"important"/"epochal"/useful Miillennium
initiatives/projects/events/expos/organizations/cities.
A 1,000-SECOND (i.e., 16 and 2/3-minute) "MILLENNIUM MEDITATION" /
"DEEP TIME EXPERIENCE", conducted individually or in small groups,
"recapitulating" the about-to-end Second Millennium at the super-fast rate of
a year a second -- and nevertheless taking a full 16 and 2/3 minutes to
complete!
The Millennium Meditation / Millennium Deep Time Experience might be conducted
with the "trip guidance" of a website-carried sequence (on one or many
Millennium websites), or as a music video presenting 1,000 images,
representing each of the 1,000 years of the 1000s, appearing one per second in
chronological numeric sequence.
(In a website version, a library of images could be available for each year,
which images are chosen at random by the digital system to pop up at that
year's point in the sequence, making each running of the sequence unique or
very nearly so.)
The Millennium Meditation would be particularly appropriate if conducted
during the exact final 1,000 seconds of the day ... or the final 1,000 seconds
of any of the dozen or so final months of the millennium! ... or the final
1,000 seconds of the year 1998!! (but not I suggest the final 1,000 seconds of
the year 1999; for that intense fulcrum of millennial time-keeping I'm
thinking of yoga and/or sedatives!).
The 1,000-second end-of-the-day Millennium Meditation brings us to...
"MILLENNIUM MIDNIGHT WAVES OF TIME"
True midnight, based on antipodal true noon, moving as a "time wave" across
the face of the Earth, continuously, as each day of the twilight year of the
1000s succeeds its predecessor _point by specific point_ on the planet's
surface, which individual families, kids, small towns, celebrants and
partiers, taverns and clubs and cybercafes, etc. can note and "celebrate" each
weekend at "Local True Midnight" ("LTM") off of a "Millennium Midnight Waves
of Time" website -- or, even better, that website on a cable TV channel, such
as the Millennium TV network (anyone know how to contact Millennium
Television?; is it operating?), or maybe The History Channel (anyone have any
contacts there?), or perhaps WebTV...
The end-of-the-day Millennium Meditations could be conducted in the 16-2/3
minutes leading up to any particular locale's True Midnight!
The travelling Wave of True Midnight should be depicted as a line in
continuous motion upon the Millennium Map of the World on the Web, momentarily
"activating" or "charging" the various Millennium-event and Millennium-
organization link-nodes that appear thereon!
BTW, one other kind of "node" should appear on the Millennium World Map:
the geographic and site-specific "nodal points" of the
MILLENNIUM WORLD SNAPSHOT a.k.a., the
MILLENNIUM HOLOMORPH
< www.vremag.com : click on Columns, then on "Wright On VR" ... >,
a massive, mega-participatory cooperative project of people everywhere in the
world to create many millions of simultaneous images at the moment, hour, and
day of the turn of the Third Millennium, making that occasion the most-
photographed and most-videographed moment in history -- and creating a
navigable database, a sphereical virtual-reality space, of hundreds of
millions of images of people, places, and events all over the world as the
1000s conclude and the 2000s are born.
The resulting time-and-space "holomorph" of multiple myriads of still and
moving images will be created, and subsequently continuously accreted, also in
a massive participatory manner, over many subsequent years as a public-private
international public arts project. The holomorph database will be organized
both in time -- covering the hours in which January 1st, 2000 moves around the
Earth replacing December 31st, 1999 -- and in space, latitudinally and
longitudinally, in every region of the world. A small army of pre-positioned
videographers will create visual geo-linear "axes" of related images in
reference to which the mass of other images can be spatially oriented, in
particular a sequential east-to-west latitudinal series of views of the final
sunset of the 1000s and, in overlapping and succeeding hours with the same
cameras turned around, the very first sunrise of the 2000s in a continous view
moving around the world!
( A smaller-scale but still massive participatory "rehearsal" of the
Millennium World Snapshot could be conducted on the occasion of the
"Millennium Eclipse" of the sun a third of a year earlier, creating a
navigable interactive database of images of the "footprint" of that total
solar eclipse, from Cornwall, England across Europe and the MIddle East to
India, on August 11th, 1999.
I'm going [where I'll be joining my crop circles video documentarian friend
Peter Sorensen in Wiltshire]; anyone else planning to make that millennial
journey? )
Any suggestions/participation/contacts/anything that anyone reading this might
care to offer regarding the promotion and strategic partnership on (for
example, I've had a nibble of interest from Eastman Kodak's business
development chief; but only if I can land one or two additional major co-
participants) and production of the Millennium World Snapshot will be most
gratefully and enthusiastically received. This is my "main" Millennium
interest, as I believe the Millennium Snapshot / Holomorph would be a
pioneering and amazing cultural, artistic, technological
document/creation/artifact/memento of what will be, finally, a totally
vanished world and mysterious, forever receding epoch -- perhaps even, from
the vantage of some still-distant 2000-something years, a Golden Age! Let's
go for it!
Well, I'll finish up this millennial missive with a few choice and pithy
Millennium aphorisms:
* Be a Friend of the Future ... by practicing (eco-) Moderation for the
Millennium!
* Ask not what the future can do for you. Ask what you can do for the
future!
* A Millennium is a terrible thing to waste. [So let's put it to the best
possible use!]
* The Third Millennium: Be There Or Be Square!

I envision a universal burst of spiritual freedom in which all
judgements, violence, jealousy and hatred are erased by the power
of our Creator. Where we as his creation are united in brother
and sisterhood with the most genuine love for one another. There
will be no need for words for we will know each others, emotions
and heart's desires through our spiritual oneness outside of the
confines of the physical and material world.

The present-day civilization stands close to the turning point.
According to the old biblical prophecies which were revealed
recently the event millennium will occur soon. It will be
announced by a new star and other celestial signs. The
forthcoming events may be catastrophic or only symbolic depending
on the attitude of people towards this event.

I would like to share with you a poem which I wrote a couple of years ago.
(c) James E Perkins
Boy with an open mind
A young boy sat on a hillside, looking in awe at the world around him.
With an open mind and great expectations he stilled himself, looking with for
guidance.
After searching his mind for his most charished question, he asked for a
vision which would show how he must be as a man in order to find his
greatest happiness in life?
It was then that he saw in the heavens the face of a man and that face
reflected an existence of much love and happiness.
The boy joined with the man so that he could see with his' eyes and think
through his' mind.
What he felt was great joy and thanksgiving for a life filled with love and
peace.
What he saw was himself, in awe at the world, sitting quietly with an open
mind and great expectations, searching for guidance from within.
Written Sincerely by Jim Perkins

When I sit down to envision a future for humankind, I first think of the
past. I look at our existence as a planned progression of an attempt to
manifest love and divine consciousness in a physical form, on a physical
plane. We are at a point in our lives, as a whole, where we need to
understand where we came from, Why we are here, and Where we are going. It
seems that there is a polarization of belief concerning our fate. Either
the end of the world is coming and we are all damned with no hope of
salvation for human life, or we will climb out of the hole we have dug for
ourselves and prosper with the help of our creator and each other. I am
not a religious person, I am a spiritual person. I am a firm believer in
God, or a higher power. I feel every person on this earth came here by
choice with a purpose and an intent to play their part and make a
difference. This pre-meditated physical life is forgotten once we arrive,
and our goal is to remember. We are surrouned by doubt. We are surrounded
by fear. Look through the surface physical trivialties and see people for
who they REALLY are. Who they were before they were faced with this
challenge of faith. Our progression is coming to a turning point, affected
by thought and energy. The mere act of positive thought has a tremendous
impact and will benefit human-kind. The same can be said for the flip-side
to that coin. All of the people filled with hate and dis-belief, who are
so sure of our demise, are actually causing it with their lack of faith.
If one can tap into the universal energy which feeds or soul creating our
reality, then it can be understood just how much your thoughts affect life.
Love thy neighboor. Love is more important than alot of people realize.
If we all stopped and looked around once in awhile we would see that we are
distracted. We wake up go to work, come home watch the news, and go to bed
never wondering why we are doing this. Why are we here? Are we to just
accept the fact that our mislearned mission is to go to
school, make lots of money, and get lost in a career and never stop to
inquire about what is really important, why we are really here doing what
we are doing. I see a future where people are working TOGETHER as a race
to achieve a higher goal and understand the higher purpose of why we are
here. A future where eminating love and compassion for others is
commonplace. As I said we all have a purpose for being here. Every single
one of us plays an important part in the divine work-in-progress of the
never-ending story. Please send me your thoughts and comments. Thank you
for your time.

I have been a subscriber to the NCN for only a short while and still
look foreward to the email like a christmas gift. In sharing visions I
must contend that each of us share through different eyes. Some of us
are material others spiritual and yet others idealistic. I have a
simple cause that I feel enamored to share.
What happened to the pioneer in America? The spirit seems dead and
simplicity a dream that only the rich can afford. Every time that I see
or read of another big executive packing in their life style for a
simple life in the mountains I get frightened. I live in Colorado which
has become the status state for the pioneer. The Californians that
decide to drop out of society and live off their nest egg in the
mountains call it "roughing it" and for me the middle class a tear is
shed as the resources are conquered by the greedy stylized Grizzly
Adams' of the world. I carry this anger inside because the spirit is
dead. It is difficult for the people that really care about the land
enough to live from it rather than purchase it and move in. Oh the
vision.... I dream of my log cabin in the mountains with the garden and
a sustainable life in harmony with Mother Earth. This I believe can be
a reality but the time is growing short. Soon all the land will be held
by the wealthy and sold for great profits for the pseudo pioneer. The
West was formed upon the adventurous backs of the pioneer who gave blood
and sweat to find the serenity they sought. There are still seekers out
there that share the same vision I do and yet we may never be able to
afford simplicity. Go figure. Even simplicity carries a large price
tag in this country.
Please email me with any comments and/or solutions you may have. We are
all in this together and peace is more than a fashion statement. Wake
up and do something. geoffecolorado@netscape.net

In 3-6 months, many, many people will be aware of the dangerous potential
of y2k. It might almost be appropriate for panic. I don't see anything that
will be in place by then that will be a real contingency for the worst-case
scenerio. However, if this list of cheap, simple, funky ways and ideas for
self-sustainability both for the indiv. and the neighborhood were developed
by then, there would probably be many, many people willing to make the
effort to implement them in the short time remaining and panic would be
alleviated. I am not a tehnical person, I can't learn all the ways in time,
the ideas must come from the handy people, not me. So. . . . .
Do you think this plan is worthy to mobilize around?
Gentle people, I hope you find these ideas worthy of supporting: First of
all, I would like to assume that you are up on y2k. But, if you are like
many progressives, you may be asleep at the wheel on this one, I hope not.
In any case, please be so kind as to indulge me for a moment, for I have
found much on the web which supports the premise that can be found on the
state of California y2k web site, that there is the possibility for
infrastructure breakdown (i.e. no electricity, etc. for an indefinite
period) and hence contingency should be implemented with this in mind.
With this possibility in mind I would like to assert that the best, the
most comfortable contingency that I can imagine would be self-sustainable,
self-reliant, neighborhoods globally and locally before 2000. This is the
funky, cheap, simple type of self-sustainability, not the deep ecology or
the bio-regionalism, or anything that would take years to implement. This
is a comprehensive self sustainability that would be more fitting for
contingency for infrastructure rupture such as y2k presents. Something that
could be done before 2000. It is a daunting challenge, but who is to say
its impossible.
The stakes are so high, with the possibility of martial law/chaos on one
side, and the other possibility. . . Imagine, if you would, the worst-case
scenario does occur and we in our wisdom had the foresight and the
diligence and the creativity to implement self-sustainable neighborhoods
comprehensively and globally in time. The safety net would be available for
everyone and everyone would experience the liberating and healing effect of
community based on mutual co-operation and after a month or who knows how
long of living this way, without money, the people of the world would see
the absurdity of ever returning to the former way of injustice, waste,
destruction, exploitation, and corruption that we have all had to endure
and which has so degraded and compromised everyone's existence. Thus the
world would be transformed in one fell swoop, possibly. Its just a
possibility, of course. But is it not worth mobilizing all those who could
help in creating an ever-improving list of!
ideas that are cheap and simple for sustainability? Would your
organization be interested in playing an instrumental role in getting this
ball rolling? This once in a millennium opportunity is very fleeting, there
is only 13 months left. There is a certain urgency, if we are not to miss
this and head into y2k with little but an ever deepening sense of panic. If
for some reason you don't agree, please let me know why. Yours in hopeful
collaboration,
Tom

Vertical gardening: Make a column out of chickenwire and tarpaper or
cardboard about 3 1/2 feet high, 14"diameter. Hold a 4" diameter pipe in
center and fill with sand and stones (for watering), fill the rest of the
area with good soil. Cut 3" slits around the outside thru the wire and
paper in a spiral pattern. Insert seedlings in slits (40-60). Can be used
on sidewalks, balconies, roofs. Sizes are arbitrary. 4 or 5 should feed a
family plenty of vegetables, plant about 2 weeks apart to keep a steady
harvest.
Local govmts. should be asked to bring grains from the silos across America
where they often rot every year and store them in accessible places for
neighborhoods in your city. Now the food produce problem is solved.12/21/98
