That Was I My self-deceptions have colored my life for so long now The deep dark blues of solemn hours were of my own making Angry reds, should have been lustful passions The mellow pinks of love could have been my companions Sunny yellow joys, too transient to warm me for long My choices were always there, but I chose the drabber tones Hide me in the shadows; I do not want any light This was my only desire. When you stand in darkness, nothing is clear. Voices call you, but you cannot place them Signs placed along the way are unreadable The path will be rocky, and you will find them all You walk looking down, always looking down The scars of past hurts mar a once perfect heart When you fall, you claw the dry lifeless earth That was I, not long ago. © December 27, 2004 Marissa A Spencer
