In a recent article called Old Habits are Dying Hard, Thank God!, I discussed what I believe stops us from being our real self on a permanent basis. I said we are too used to believing only in what we can see instead of believing in our real Self. Actually, that is not strictly true. Consider the following:
"Excuse me, do you believe in love?"
"Yes I do."
"How do you know love exists?"
"Because I know it does, I can feel it, it's real."
"But you can't see love, can you?"
"No, I can't see, feel or hear love in the human sense but I know it exists and I experience it as real."
"Aha, so you do believe in things you can't see!"
As you can see, we all do believe in happiness, joy, love, beauty, truth, peace and yet we can't see them. If we didn't believe in them we wouldn't be seeking to experience them. What stops us from focusing on what we believe is real? Why does it always seem so easy to focus on fear than experiencing love all the time?
For example, you know that if you put your hand in the fire you're going to get burnt, unless you're someone who can walk on fire without any effects. Let's say for argument's sake you're like most people who gets burnt by fire. Once you've experience it once, even twice, you soon learn not to put your hand in the fire. Similarly, if you know focusing on thoughts of fear makes you fearful, angry, and depressed, why would you continue to focus on what you don't want to experience? The mystics have said that you should just focus on your Real Self that is Love and you become that which you focus on. Is it as simple as changing one's habits by focusing only on ideas of love and peace? I practise focusing only on my real Self and yet I don't feel I am experiencing who I am 100%. Is there something else going on behind the scenes that is deliberately preventing me from being my true self on a permanent basis? I believe there is something that tests us.
Just as I was getting ready to leave this morning, my mother, who I live with at the moment, called me into the living room. She pointed out to me that I hoovered the carpet yesterday yet she could still see fluffy stuff and bits and pieces on the carpet. She believed I had dropped them on the carpet. Did I stand there arguing with her? No, I just picked the bits up and put them in the bin.
I believe the experience with my mother was a test, one of the many tests we go through. These tests are not to teach us how to love or be love, but their purpose is twofold.
First, to distract us from knowing and being who we really are. If I'd reacted to my mother's comments with irritation, I would have been disconnected from being the Love that I am. Instead, I remained true to myself.
Second, while we are distracted from being the Love that we are, someone benefits.
Who exactly sets us these tests? There is an invisible force behind the scenes that set up these tests. Many traditions have a name for this force. Christians call it the Devil. Don Juan refers to this force as the predator or "mud shadows." I'll let don Juan describe their real purpose.

"I want to appeal to your analytical mind," don Juan said. "Think for a moment, and tell me how you would explain the contradiction between the intelligence of man the engineer and the stupidity of his systems of beliefs, or the stupidity of his contradictory behavior. Sorcerers believe that the predators have given us our systems of beliefs, our ideas of good and evil, our social mores. They are the ones who set up our hopes and expectations and dreams of success and failure. They have given us covetousness, greed, and cowardice. It is the predators who make us complacent, routinary and egomaniacal."
"But how can they do this, don Juan?" I asked, somehow angered further by what he was saying. "Do they whisper all that in our ears while we are asleep?"
"No, they don't do it that way. That's idiotic!" don Juan said, smiling. "They are infinitely more efficient and organized than that. In order to keep us obedient and meek and weak, the predators engaged themselves in a stupendous maneuver - stupendous, of course, from the point of view of a fighting strategist. A horrendous maneuver from the point of view of those who suffer it. They gave us their mind! Do you hear me? The predators gave us their mind, which becomes our mind. The predator's mind is baroque, contradictory, morose, filled with the fear of being discovered any minute now." (The Active Side of Infinity, Carlos Castaneda, p. 219-220)]]
So what we call the ego has been created by this predator. The predator keeps us busy worrying about stuff, being angry, being fearful, trying to control others; and while we're busy worrying the predator gets his food. In the meantime, what you focus on you experience as your reality. You end up living in a world of competition, control, lack, disease and suffering, which creates more fear, leading to more food for the predator. And you end up not being the Love that you are.
In another perspective, the writer refers to the predator as a "collective of energies who believe they own [y]our world."

Another perspective:

Aren't these "predators" clever? They manipulate us so they can either use the energy we emit as food, or for whatever they need it for. Thus, manipulation continues in all aspects of society, from our politicians to our education establishment, the media, scientists, religion, spiritual beliefs, our spirit guides and even channelled entities.
The bottom line is
Every time I worry, I am not being my real self; and feeding the predator.
Every time I react to something with anger or fear I am not being my real self; and feeding the predator.
I am only interested in being my real self all the time. The rest is nothing but bits of fluff on the carpet.
Only Love is real.
