Think about this: words like (Free - Reef); (Cheat - Teach)! The researchers should be more elaborate and specific in reporting their research findings, there are other good and hardworking brains around the world!!! But those particular examples don't prove it, as the first and last letters need to stay in the same place. Confusing words would be ones that had the same first and last letters such as Fired - Fried.
