According to the United Nations "Outer Space Treaty", signed by the US, the Moon and other worlds "shall be the province of all mankind".

In the "Moon Treaty" it is further elaborated that it cannot be anyone's property.

To some, this is a major road block preventing us from doing business in space. A rule limiting our freedom and imposing Earthly laws and bureaucracy to the free realms of space. To others, it's a very beautiful idea - that the heavens belong to all of us - and a strong mark against the export of old territorial thinking to this new frontier.

A few entrepreneurs, opposing these treaties, have taken the matter in their own hands and registered entire worlds as being their own property. Dennis Hope of the Lunar Embassy claims to be the owner of the Moon, and Gregory Nemitz of Orbital Development claims to own asteroid Eros, simply because they say they were the first. In addition, the Lunar Embassy is even selling off small pieces of the Moon to people around the world, stating that the buyers actually own their lands... More>

i think those who live 'out there' may have a little to say about that, eh? hahahahahaha these bunch of blusterers should go back to high school and stop messing around with this, and other, worlds! god how absurd and insane are their propositions based only on greed and political power/machinations...

I claim the rest of the stars...so any trespassers will be shot on sight! Bwaaahh

10 Dec 2003 @ 10:36 by waalstraat : The problem is
the initial treaties are still based in a concept of property: The moon and all other worlds do not belong to all mankind..."belong"? The moon and all planets belong no one or mankind. All sentient beings have the right to enjoy them and be awed by them, as long as they respect their miracles and if they need to partake of them always restore what they have partaken of and be willing to share it.

10 Dec 2003 @ 18:30 by i2i : ) Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655)
wrote stories of imaginary journeys to the Moon and Sun (Other Worlds: The Comical History of the States and The Empires of the Moon and the Sun) and satirized views, which saw humanity and the Earth as the center of creation.

He also mocked Descartes's idea that animals are soulless machines.

In his trip to the Moon Cyrano takes off from the Earth in an apparatus festooned with firecrackers. There he is classified as a bird because he has two legs. In the second journey he is tried for the crimes of humanity by a court of birds. Cyrano defends himself that he is not a human being but an ape: {link:http://www.marieb.com/phil335.html|link}

...vanitatum omnia vanitas

"Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us...The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light…
There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”

This is remincent of the Gold Rush in the 1800's. It's all about greed and money. The ordacity of these con men to sell what never ever beloned to them is simply nauseating. You know something? If this kinda crap goes on, we may never see interplanetary space. This kind of greed is going to eventually destroy us one day- if we let these greedy muthas rape and pillage the Solar System! Why can't we ever learn from our horrible mistakes on this planet- are we gonna dump
dysfunctional bullshit on the rest of the solar system too? We deserve to have our asses kicked !!! Ask the American Indian- the Mayans. Look at what others like these geedy bastards have done to Mother Earth !!! I wish Carl Sagan was still with us now........
