Alfred the Great (Old English: Ælfrēd, Ælfrǣd, "elf advice"; 849 – 26 October 899), was king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex from 871 to 899. Alfred is noted for his defense of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of southern England against the Vikings, becoming the only English king to be given the epithet "the Great".[1] Alfred was the first King of the West Saxons to style himself "King of the Anglo-Saxons". Sound the
Alarm
Sculptor: Robert K. Spaith
Date: 1999
“Fire! Sound the alarm!” In Alberta’s
pioneer communities, a cry of fire struck fear in the hearts of the
citizens. In no time at all, an entire community might
be virtually wiped out and many lives lost. In the fall of 1904,
following a major fire in Red Deer’s downtown,
Town Council passed a bylaw creating a volunteer fire brigade. New
equipment was purchased and eventually a new fire hall was built.
The building beside this ghost has had many lives. It has served Red
Deer as an armory, a fire hall, and now it is the children’s
section of the Red Deer Public Library. At the street lights, cross 49
Street to the south west corner of 49 Street and 48 Avenue where you
will find the Dr. Richard Parsons Residence, a lovely 1903 brick home.
An historic plaque outside the home gives you more information. It is
part of the Red Deer "Ghosts" Project.
Ghosts Project Red Deer
Eight bronze sculptures depicting figures from Red Deer's history stand
on guard of our streets. Have a seat beside Reverend Gaetz. Many say he
is a good listener and even replies on occasion. Look into the face of
the one handed man that fights to control his team of horses and feel
the power and energy of the 'Sound the Alarm' ghost. Stop to see our
national headliner 'Francis the Pig' who turned the Downtown
upside-down when he made it his home in 1990. Each has a story worth
exploring.

An introduction to the science and art of perception management.
The phrase "perception management" is filtering into common use as a synonym for "persuasion." Public relations firms now offer "perception management" as one of their services. Similarly, public officials who are being accused of shading the truth are now frequently charged with engaging in "perception management" when disseminating information to media or to the general public.
Although perception management operations are typically carried out within the international arena between governments, and between governments and citizens, use of perception management techniques have become part of mainstream information management systems in many ways that do not concern military campaigns or government relations with citizenry. Businesses may even contract with other businesses to conduct perception management for them, or they may conduct it in-house with their public relations staff.

Perception management is a term originated by the U. S. military. The U. S. Department of Defense (DOD) gives this definition:
Actions to convey and/or deny selected information and indicators to foreign audiences to influence their emotions, motives, and objective reasoning as well as to intelligence systems and leaders at all levels to influence official estimates, ultimately resulting in foreign behaviors and official actions favorable to the originator's objectives. In various ways, perception management combines truth projection, operations security, cover and deception, and psychological operations.
