Comparing open and structured methods, their easiness, joyfulness, and effectivity is quite a task, but I feel very much needed ! )I will sketch some notes below, but maybe check out this before:

The process and format of the d-school design process is very effective, keeping the time in mind and creating effective impulses and exchanges. So a lot of results by following a clear process. I can compare with the results form Open-Spaces and the Magic roundtables. A very interesting add-on – as all are effective and play-like. I am presently following the harvesting after a full days work. The Results will be presented during the Vision Summit – so lets see later this week! Meanwhile please enjoy the links above !

[link] My grad students from the MDes in Strategic Foresight & Innovation won the Rotman Design Challenge outright, breaking their way into the business design community and stealing it from 20 invited entrants. I think Stanford’s d.school is a little oversold – At OCAD we teach a version of Design Thinking based on Buchanan’s 1992 work (Wicked Problems in Design Thinking) and not the Tim Brown commerce style. Some more musing on a broader picture and what needs to be done below:
I would like to dedicate this think-piece to Hasan Ozbekhan, Jay Stephen Kline, Ralph G H Siu, Herbert Stachowiak, Hellmuth Plessner/Hans Jonas, maybe also Doxiadis, and last-not-least Elinor Ostrom.
Many other creative and unorthodox thinkers like Gregory Bateson, Ingetraut Dahlberg, Mary Parker Follett,… come to mind, and I know that I do not mention here contemporary people riding the waves of DESIGN TODAY like: David Kelley Hough Dubberly and even Alexander Christakis with his Participatory Structured Design (see also Ozbekhan, Jantsch, Warfield…), as I want to revisit here first some roots and fundamentals and set the plot/scene for this little paper of concern…
Here we go beyond object design, Gestaltung, the artists and crafter designing a certain artefact – bringing into harmony form and function and benefits. We first look at the scene and the common frames of reference, is an individual or group designing ? – even for some common good, looking into causes and effects, intentions and impacts along and across scales, and what are the effects outside the win-win-win situation? How are others involved and impacted? Can they become stakeholders or remain observers, subject to inflictions of suffering?
First Question. Do we design only Object, or also Situations? Do we use Situation Rooms? Where to Models fit in here?
Second Question: Can we borough from the concept of Ecology?

Another point of entry would be setting the whole and allowing in-betweening, are we talking here of ecology, of cultural and human ecology, also about social ecology? Where is the link the ecosystems, where do they connect and interact? We have helped to coin the term “glocal” 22 years ago. See Encyclopedia of Systems and Cybernetics and Wikipedia. Scientists we only concerned with their field or turf in sweet isolation, and so challenges of “Global Change – Challenges of Science and politics were neglected. I can only point to: Compassion or Ignorance? Published early 2011.
When talking about a NEW AGORA we see it needs not only negotiations, but shared values in shared frames of references.

So what are Global Entrepreneurs? Are they “glocal” (local and global) with a focus on episodic and epochal change in different cultures, mindsets, and regimes of expressions ways of communicating and presenting?

We have to “revisit” 25 years Tschernobyl today. Have we learned to look at the scales, proportions, impacts, consequences the effects created and inflicted onto “others” ?
