picture picture 17 Oct 2011 @ 18:37
I just finished my talk about SDD & DIGITAL PETERS - tomorrow we sum up at UNEP's Verte conference and deliver as always to the "right" people.... [link]
earthfocusfoundation.org/programme/ VIDEO to come...
I will see that my prsentations from Autumn 2010 and Spring 2011 are also soon avaible nicely in a series of videos - maybe we make it a suite?

The concerence is overshadowed by our Nicola being operated today for 5 hours. So is Life.
I recommed to check out YOUTH outcomes tomorrow and wait for the video - as always in top quality. I was for GYC now the 3rd time in Geneva - it is as always a breakthrough, challenging, and worth all the efforts.

Planning revisited - reflections after 3 days research policy explorations
picture 15 Oct 2011 @ 10:55
Reporting from: International Conference. „Planning Research for the Future?“ 13 – 15 October 2011. Research and science are the keys to our future. But how do institutions ... [link]

These 3 days were about research policy - how it is designed in various countries and what the problems and challenges are. The opening keynote by Prof. Michael Zürn from WZB was outstanding and full of deep insights and surprising analogies and metaphors. He Spoke about High Priests and Schamans in the trade of designing science futures. I hope to get his paper any minute, so I can link and cite properly. Also the introduction to teh conference by Prof. Carsten Dreher was very helpful and deep. I will also cite and link details after receipt.
Last day it was about "Strategic Intelligence" and how to "Leave the Nutshell". Visit the recordings, videos, papers, websites. Highly recommended in the field.

New Thinking about Global Challenges & the case of LUXOR vs ATHENS
picture picture 10 Oct 2011 @ 13:27
Reporting from NEW THINKING ABOUT GLOBAL CHALLENGES. PDF
PIK-call

This is really a top catalytic event not just focussing about the economic sector, but all sectors, all levels, and bridging time-frames. Just check out the organizers and papers. And maybe Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) which is very active and present here in Berlin. Maybe read "Evolution instead of Balance".

I noted in the opening session: '''Luxor vs Athens''' - A hot and timely topic for me as we are looking for example into "Harnessing the Collective Wisdom of the People" } (backgrounder) in the Institute of 21st Century Agoras. You see, opting for the Athens participatory, collaborative and disciplined, structured, dialogic design alternative. maybed Check : OPEN GOVERNMENT and Government 2.0 ! (PDF-German/some English) Maybe pls. also check: 21stCenturyAgora and a "backgrounder" jumppage.

Women of the year & the AGORA Castle exercise
picture picture 24 Sep 2011 @ 20:26
Yesterday was a full, exhausting day, but also thilling and exciting. First the WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2011 award Dinner and celebrations and then till late in the night discussing the BERLIN castle and the AGORA.

Dr. Angela Dammann received the award and Prof. Dr. Jutta Almendinger. spoke free, alive and from her heart about Woman and Professionalism, Statistics, Society, Discrimination and Power. They both were present cheerful, scientific, deep, impressive, ... Mrs Dammann received the 10. Mestemacher Award and dedicated it to the Nuesslein Foundation. Pictures thanks to © Baganz.

Afterward we had a full programme discussin the Future of the BERLIN CASTLE and the HUMBOLDT FORUM "SCHLOSS". A very controversial ongoing matter here in Berlin. More later - maybe in-between check this earlier entry at QUERGEIST: [link]

Harnessing Wisdom & Concerting Shared Actions and Frames across Scales
picture 19 Sep 2011 @ 16:44
The new Europe'sWorld interview has hit "the streets & air". In this conversation we covered the terrain of Christakis's work over 40+ years and provide an outlook on what needs to be done to build commons and work on facilitation, moderation and reconcilliation.

Please see both interviews and come back as I want to tell stories I heard from him, stories which can tell much more than any science, system or formular.

But before, please check the inteviews/conversation I did with him recently: EUROPEsWORLD

RECIPES FOR SURVIVAL -30 years physicians & physicsts for Peace / against War
picture picture 17 Sep 2011 @ 10:33
Presently revisting milestones from 30 years IPPNW. Gottstein and Horst-Eberhard Richter were a moment talking I strongly recommend to check the programme and website.
Stories from Cold War are most appaling and some sound funny when looking back, having survived..

Me representing at this event the COUNCIL ON GLOBAL ISSUES [link] and so closely linked in Toronto to Science for Peace, Pugwash,... and naturally the Tagore Einstein Council [link] where we are celebrating this year another Peace make Rabindranath Tagore and his young friends and collegues long ago, Albert Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi.
I see members of the VDW and Pugwash and feel at home, even when not a physician - more a geophysician - geoscientist also dome some years geophysics at the University Hamburg in the early 70ies. I even call myself in the late 70ies a GeoPhysician - everybody understood - only some very educated native English people smiled - some arrogsantly - none explained that that this would mean working on the body of the Earth, not the Body of Humans or "Living Things". In retrospect after now 30 years still feel like a geophysician sometimes, just working on other scales and prefer to use the old world Geognostic - see the wholeness seminar where look more into Eidetics and Holism. Maybe start with reading about Jan Christian Smuts and Ralph G.H. Siu to widen the horizons to help us understand what is at stake....

today we face exactly the same challenges between worlds - more South-North and not cold war East-West, but times changes as do the directions at the windrose..... what is needed is a new kind of compass and gyros, nes Pilots (Lotsen), Captains, and Sailors to new shores - but also New Encyclopedists I covered elsewhere....

Please also see my question to Horst-Eberhard Richter and the hand-out at IPPNW in 2003. Increasing the Horizon and Compassion and reducing the Suffering in the World. [link] see also the 2011: Ignorance and Comapssion link summarizing publications and lectures over the last 8+ years: [link]

WORK IN PROGRESS - PLS WAIT
The last EERA Panel: What will be the role of educational research in building the future of Europe? was most interesting, and has much to do with URBAN EDUCATION and JUSTICE: See that the Union has set five ambitious objectives - on employment, innovation, education, social inclusion and climate/energy - to be reached by 2020
[link] will add questions from the floor etc.... [link] we need to check for inclusion and many other objectives set out later.
Please also see the 2nd EUROPEsWORLD Interview with Alexander Christakis due next Monday: [link] Europe’s World is the only independent Europe-wide policy journal, produced in association with some 150-plus leading European think tanks and academic institutions. In that conversation and interview I focus more on the question asked from the floor to the panel: Check (CARDIAC)http://www.cardiac-eu.org/about/structured_dialogue.htm and funding policy priority setting with structured deliberative distributed new approaches...  IASS and IAA
picture picture 14 Sep 2011 @ 04:59
DRAFT - ARTICLE IN PROGRESS
What a day ! Not only the IAA - Frankfurt Motor Show but also the IASS - Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies keep me breathless.
Talked a lot about the ways we build cars, how we make go and what the evolution of consumption and markets have been the last 30 years [more] and in the evening at a unique Summer Fest till late in the night at the IASS, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, where a core group of movers and shakers around sustainability and politics internationally were gathering to celebrate the institute now finally comming to grips after years of preparations and hiring staff and appointing board-members and associates.

The Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA, English: International Automobile Exhibition), also known as the Frankfurt Motor Show or Frankfurt Auto Show, is one of the world's largest motor shows. It is held biennially in Frankfurt, Germany.
The IAA is organized by the Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA). Since 1991 the show is split in two: Even-numbered years show commercial vehicles in Hanover and odd-numbered years passenger vehicles (including some motorcycles) in Frankfurt. The show is scheduled by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles, which considers it a major international auto show.

IASS, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e. V., in Potsdam
[link]
The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e. V. (IASS) in Potsdam has achieved great progress over the last year. The number of outstanding scientific fellows and staff members from Germany and around the world is steadily increasing. We have held a number of internationally attended workshops on diverse issues and have initiated a range of comprehensive scientific projects. These are reason enough to celebrate with our partners and the individuals who are interested in our institute. We want to deepen the dialogue between science, politics and society.

DRAFT ! still working hard on Beijing Business and Technology Transfer Center, scope of the IASS and what is up and at stake ....

 IFA & kizuna
picture picture picture picture 8 Sep 2011 @ 19:33
hectic times, again IFA this year with breakthroughs around 3D and New Media, but the concepts of being connected, or bonded caught my attention. The keynote of Masaaki Osumi was about smart communities, energy efficiency and building infrastructures, and what connects them, maybe call it "bonding" = kizuna.
Kizuna is not just a Manga character but used now to present the needs to connect across scales. So his talk was about smart houses and smart settlements/environments. As you you know "my field"...

The idea of "intelligent" smart designs of "intelligent, ecoefficient buildings, active/passive/0-energy houses / ... we have not only shown in the Global Change exhibition 20+ years ago, we also tried in state-planning 30+years ago, looking into smart infrastructures including transport/sewer/ .... grey/blue water and connection to the underground water cycles... A deja vue.... Please see "cradle to cradle" in this blog [link] and the watercycle and soil preesenations at the GLOBAL YOUTH conferences: [link] and [link] but also: [link]

What caught my attention was the need to establish bonds across scales in emergency, like Fukushima worst case in Japan. But also the structured thinking I adore so much and have looked into in my papers on Gestalt and "ba".

This "kizuna" as a bond also between actors and scales fit perfectly what I called "Zusammenhang kein Zusammenhalt" long ago, and was blamed for a this was an address to the State" in the Rede to the German Nation by Fichte:
maybe see my little contribution in SAYING NO: [link] in German a "Culture of Refusal".

The IFA was about APPLE and SAMSUNG - and copyrights on Communication devices and formats, tablets,....
but also about the MEDIA WEEK - so check later entries about CTT11 and and cothinktank [link] activities around the IFA...
more hopefully soon !

This is Heiner Benking's News Log, a private-public diary presenting events, symposia and happenings in Berlin and elsewhere - my farings, foci, issues and concerns.

PLEASE CONSIDER THIS PERSONAL BLOG an ARTISTIC and PERFORMATIVE MEDIA INTERVENTION !

The Log links to my work and interests and presents issues and special concern of maybe a very small group of "concerned, engaged generalist" - a Global Interest Group (GIG). This needs to be seen in contrast to the ubiquitous Specialized Interest Groups (SIGs), the "scientific" approach to organize subject areas and specialization and standardization and harmonization! of means, nomenclatures, and modes of thinking. My favorite stories in the WHOLENESS SEMINAR include:
BELA BANATHY: "GENESIS
OF GENERAL SYSTEMS THEORY"
and "IVAN HAVEL: Longing for Unified Knowledge" where a "specialist" runs into the founding session of the early foundations General Systems, mumbling "this is not my field" or where Ivan M. Havel expresses his search for other kinds of knowledge.
As a starter I also recommend to check my MINDPRINT site, where we add the need for HANDPRINTS and MINDPRINTS, as FOOTPRINTS are good to visualize and communicate numbers, densities or consumption per area, but are not sufficient to negotiate and "harmonize" across domains and communicate gains in different cultures, technologies, times,... in short: incompatible but relevant information and our work on dialog, peace, policy-making, and multi-modal, faceted issues and consequences.
What am I? This is a "well-packed" question for which I have not the or a single answer. Some called me an in-betweener, go-getter, facilitator, hub, marvel-hero, trim-tab, bricoleur, bricoleers??? - career designeer, .... Some even "hank" which I disliked or Story which I liked very much !!
I have no single answer as I feel we need to walk the talk and sing and dance Life ! in spectra and fields in multiple embodied spaces.
To nebulous an answer? I am sorry but I do not go for overclaims and oversimplifications, under-complex and over-simplistic approaches with clan-think mindsets about real issues in clear contexts!
