Today is March 7, 2004, Sunday afternoon. John (koravya) and Katelyn ( Swan) are really having coffee in John's backyard in Albuquerque, NM. I Swan, have come from Minnesota to share this cup of coffee. It is a beautiful day here, the temperature is in the 60's, the sky is blue and the sun is shining. It has been almost a year since the first "Coffee in the Backyard" journal entry was made. This is my first trip to Albuquerque and my first day here. It's pretty "cool" to have brought the virtual into the real. So here we are. More >

If you were granted one wish that would enable you to do one thing that would result in a better world - what would that one thing be and why?
I have been thinking about this question today. One of my deep reflective moods I fear so I thought I would ask all of you what you would do....
There are so many things that I like to do but on thinking about it the one thing that I would be is - eliminate the financial/banking system and revert back to goods trading. This would be after everyone was distributed an even share of land, goods etc. Then no one would be disadvantaged at the onset and it would be up to each and every one us to work together.
Why, because money corrupts and we can't win the war unless we change the system.

In January I attended a Reunion of the Intersection. I began folk dancing in 1970 while staying with my sister, Carolina, one summer in Los Angeles. What an amazing night the reunion was! I got to see many of my old friends and connect with people I use to perform with as the Intersection Dancers, Panegri, Gypsy Camp and an brief stint in an Arabic Folk group. I was amazed at the love so present in the music, in the connections and in the dance.
At one point in the evening a haspiko came on. All of our old dance teachers got up and formed a line to dance together once again. It was beautiful to see! As in any small village (300 of us total), we arranged ourselves in a spiral, circling around these elders. At the front of the line were those of us they taught and performed with. Looking around the circle I sensed a feeling of community that is unique to this group of people.
I am delighted to know the energy of the night shifted many of us and the dance, like our connections continue.....

My daugther discovered Google. I guess she has seen us searching for stuff, so she knew that was something to do. So, she decided on her own she wanted to look for Cindarella. She found Google, but she couldn't spell "Cindarella", so she spelled one of the five or so things she can spell: her own name. Which right away got her to some story from my weblog. And in less than 10 seconds she had a picture of herself on the screen. Which she thought was very cool. More >

WE NEED A DREAM
Like never before
The dream of all dreams
The dream of all time
We need a dream
To heal
The most fearful of souls
Broken of hearts
Sickly of bodies
Disturbed of minds
We need a dream
To transmute
The most hideous of hate
Ghastly of greed
Rigid of righteousness
Lowest of laziness
We need a dream
To inspire
The most uninspirable
Most disenchanted
Most adversarial
And the rest of the world
We need a dream

Neil Young's Greendale tour runs on biodiesel
Singer had fleet converted to new fuel Reduces chemical emissions up to 80%
JULIET WILLIAMS
ASSOCIATED PRESS
MILWAUKEE—Saving the family farm, helping the Earth and reducing America's dependence on foreign oil — they all go together for Neil Young on his Greendale tour.
The veteran Canadian rocker rolled into town yesterday with a fleet of buses and trucks running on biodiesel, an environmentally friendly fuel made from renewable resources such as soybean oil and recycled cooking oil.
Young said switching to biodiesel was his idea.
"Rather than talk about it, I figured just do it," he said, noting there is an environmentalist character in his new show, which includes performance as well as music.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Young said he can still be a capitalist and embrace the environment.
"I'm just trying to make a point. There are other ways to be self-sustaining," he said.
Young, who clearly has done his research, recited the reasons why biodiesel makes sense: It releases no ozone-polluting chemicals and reduces emissions by 60 per cent to 80 per cent; it's entirely renewable and doesn't require major exploration to extract; American farmers could produce it for a living wage; and it would probably save a tree or two slated for demolition in Alaska.
Alternative fuel has caught on in some places. More than 400 fleets across the U.S. now use it, including the U.S. Postal Service, Yellowstone National Park, public utility companies and school districts, according to the National Biodiesel Board. Its use in Canada is also catching on.
But Young said ignorance holds many people back. His longtime trucking company turned him down when he first approached them about switching fuels. He switched trucking companies, too.
"I'm sure a lot of people who consider themselves to be conscientious would use it if they knew more about it," Young said.
"The people who have enough money to buy an Escalade or something like that are the ones who can afford to pay a bit more for this ... SUVs could be offered with a diesel option."
Young said as a member of Farm Aid for 18 years, he's always looking for ways to help the family farmer. He said there are millions of acres of unfarmed crop land in the United States and Canada that could be tapped for renewable energy.
But Young knows it's a struggle to persuade people to end their reliance on fossil fuels during the pro-oil tenure of President George W. Bush.
"You can't change the Bush administration with this. I mean, to them, I'm a tree hugger," he said.
"But I think to affect change you first have to have examples. If the children out there who have a conscience about this planet see this, they might be inspired." More >

When will we learn, to at least do it right, without destroying everything. How can they be stopped, if the people we gave the power to protect our resources and wildland habitats, are working for the companys that are doing the damage? Flippin insane abomination of the American way. Read about it here and weep.

A fascinating evening at the Minnesota Democratic caucuses. Several things things truly impressed and amazed me.
1) The number of people who turned out to the caucuses. There were about twice as many people present as I normally see at a precinct caucus.
2) The intensity of the feeling in everyone present.
There was a powerful feeling of coherence there - a single focus, returning control of the country to the people. I found that consensus was formed very quickly on resolutions, although there was discussion on nearly every point. It appeared that everyone was focused on an objective, rather than on political division, or making smaller individual points. There was the sense that there is too much at stake.
It is the same wherever I look. The deep-seated political division in the USA is so thick, it feels like you could cut it with a knife. This political season is going to be deep and emotions are going to run hot and heavy. More >

The Waiting Play
The silent darkness hides a silver light
Supplicant steps to evening prayer
Voices rise and fall in soft cadence step
Figures glide down the path at night
Arise oh moon to light the gentle way
For candles flicker in the erratic breeze
Bring no doubt to the sacred stones
To disempower the waiting play
Universe brings forth thy power
Each creature of the world is one
Nurtured in the earth, wind and fire
To incubate in Phoenix’ bower.

Alright, so having a mobile phone with a camera I of course need to have a moblog. "Moblog" is an even worse word than "Blog", but that's somehow what it got to be called. It is essentially that you can make a posting on your blog while on the go, from a phone or PDA. Typically it is done by having the latest picture in a sidebar, which then links to the gallery of past pictures. So it becomes sort of a different track, with smaller snapshots of things one is doing, without having to be able to say something clever about it.
I had in mind programming it myself, so that it could be integrated with my NewsLog blogging program. So, the first thing needed was a gallery. And there's of course no reason one should only be able to post to it with a phone, so I made it so one can upload from a normal file too, or grab a picture from a URL. And so one can edit the titles, delete mistaken pictures and stuff like that.
OK, then the aspect of how we get from my phone to a file on the server, if I go that way. I could make my own approach, but I glanced at other people's suggestions to see what might be the best practices. Like this how-to guide by David Davies.
So, I set up a separate e-mail account for the purpose. No problem to send a picture from the phone to an e-mail address. Then I'll put a password in the subject line, which will ensure that no random spam gets posted. And I'll put some descriptive text in the message itself.
Now, picking up e-mail from a pop account, and finding an attached picture, is not quite as trivial a programming task as it might look like. It is no wonder that most e-mail programs do something different and often screw up each other's messages. The standards are rather complicated, and everybody doesn't keep them. So this part took the longest time. I used PHP's built-in IMAP functions, which is based on a common IMAP library. Which exposes a lot of the dirty detail, rather than just doing the job for me, like handing me the attachment no matter where it was hiding. For starters, I made it so that it at least picks up the text and attachments the way my phone sends it. Which happened to be two different ways depending on whether it was a photo or a drawing. Next I'll try sending pictures from my normal e-mail programs and debug what goes wrong with that. Anyway, I made the program pick up mail once per hour, as the mail pickup is rather slow, and I don't want to overload anything if there ends up being many of these accounts.
You can see the current result in my right sidebar. Just a few pictures so far, but you get the point.
And for you other guys who use my NewsLog program, I need to work out a few more details, then this functionality will be available for you too. I.e. you can have a picture gallery, and optionally post to it via e-mail. Only hurdle for that part might be to acquire an extra e-mail account for the purpose. More >
