Rock returns to the Fire.
Cloud-water returns to the Ocean.
Fire returns to the Water.
Another cycle of Life begins.
*
Rock grows into Tree-by-the-Lake.
Roots drink from the water table.
Breath of the leaf is extinguished
by Fire-in-the-Rain.
Tree burns away,
returning to Cloud and the Rock.
*
Sun fire continues to warm the Ocean
which breathes through fire in the water.
The fire within Rock burns within flesh.
When the Rock melts
and returns to the Twins
of fire and water,
The Wind may scatter
the seeds of recollection
to the Twin continents
of Ollin and Tethys,
and to the Twin oceans:
the Indo-Pacific and the Arctic-Atlantic.
The seeds of recollection
may find a new path
for return into Life.

Should New Jersey's poet laureate Amiri Baraka be forced to resign for writing a poem implying Israeli's knew about the nine-eleven terrorist attack before it happened?

By now I have had many experiences of how people come together in useful ways online, and I probably have more experiences of how people didn't succeed in coming together in a useful way. Anyway, it is probably a good thing to learn from some of that, so let me start with one of the stories. This is a story of both failure and success. I'll change the names for now, but if anybody wants to look more closely at it, you can quickly figure them out.
A few years ago an NCN member (let's call him Uriah Rex) had a vision of a company that would be a creative hub. It would facilitate the creative expression of many people. Film, books, art, and whatever new outlets the participants could think up. He wanted to bring together some people to manifest the vision. And the vision was strong and big and compelling. More >

"There was a pool
silver with shining water...
Here Narcissus...
came to rest...
to quench his thirsts...
and fell in love with that unbodied hope...
The vision is only shadow,
only reflection...
I know my image now...
And even in hell he found a pool to gaze in,
watching his image in the Stygian water."
---Ovid, Metamorphoses [6] iii 326
Until the End of the World (1991)
Directed by Wim Wenders. Written by Wenders and Peter Carey. Starring Solveig Dommartin, William Hurt, Sam Neill.
"They lived to see their dreams.
And when they slept, they dreamed about their dreams."
"...and here you are, seeing yourself to death."
Synopsis:
In a variant of virtual reality, the movie features a bizarre invention with unexpected technical and philosophical complications. The 'visionary' invention is a camera that records 'the act of seeing' so that one person's vision can be transmitted directly into the brain of another---allowing even a blind person to see, if only vicariously. Others are drawn into the experiment, and ultimately use the technology to project the contents of their own minds, their childhood memories and dreams.
Soon they become addicted to watching their own mental images on-screen. The fascination becomes an all-enveloping, morbid obsession that, like heroin, displaces all other concerns. The addicts eventually become zombies incapable of relating to anything save their inward visions. (1)

The best way forward is not to wait, watch and offer solutions once the damage has been done to the victims. Rather, it is vital for us to use our power as women to influence political decisions in favour of the rights of peoples by lobbying the United Nations and global policy-makers.

War is Peace, which means villains are necessary.
Many thousands of years ago, the ethic of 'War is Peace' was conceived.
When war rages, or the threat of war looms overhead, the masses become focused on that impending doom. This clears the pathway for the ruling classes to lead a peaceful existence, well away from the gaze of the 'cattle' (that's you and I).
This is what the phrase 'War is Peace' actually means. It's a double-bound statement. The notion of war is and always has been a technique employed for keeping the masses in a state of perpetual fear. Divide and Rule. Order out of Chaos.... More >

Today the world gets a glimpse of the future. General Motors' revolutionary Hy-wire car makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show. GM's automobile runs on hydrogen, the most basic and lightest element in the universe. When burned, hydrogen emits only pure water and heat.

Not sure how widely circulated this is. It surely is good news from the halls of power, somebody is standing up in order to be counted. A letter from former Secretary of State; Ramsey Clark to Kofi Annan. Has this been big news in the USA?
September 20, 2002
Secretary General Kofi Annan United Nations New York, NY
Dear Secretary General Annan,
George Bush will invade Iraq unless restrained by the United Nations. Other international organizations-- including the European Union, the African Union, the OAS, the Arab League, stalwart nations courageous enough to speak out against superpower aggression, international peace movements, political leadership, and public opinion within the United States--must do their part for peace. If the United Nations, above all, fails to oppose a U.S. invasion of Iraq, it will forfeit its honor, integrity and raison d'etre.
A military attack on Iraq is obviously criminal; completely inconsistent with urgent needs of the Peoples of the United Nations; unjustifiable on any legal or moral ground; irrational in light of the known facts; out of proportion to other existing threats of war and violence; and a dangerous adventure risking continuing conflict throughout the region and far beyond for years to come. The most careful analysis must be made as to why the world is subjected to such threats of violence by its only superpower, which could so safely and importantly lead us on the road to peace, and how the UN can avoid the human tragedy of yet another major assault on Iraq and the powerful stimulus for retaliatory terrorism it would create. Telepistemology in the Age of the Internet
"As the virtual world grows to encompass all aspects of our lives and online interactions shape our communities, influence our politics and mediate our close relationships, the quality of being real, which is accepted and assumed with little thought in the physical world, becomes one of the central questions of society..."

A concern for any virtual community space is how we can verify whether people are who they say they are, or whether we even care if anybody is who they say they are.
If people can just go and create a profile by filling in a name and an e-mail, we're not really going to be sure who they are at first, beyond what they say. They might create several accounts and pretend to be different people.
We can of course make more stringent criteria for opening new accounts. For example, that one has to be referred by some already known person, and that one has to fill in a considerable amount of information about oneself, and somebody has to examine that and approve the application.
But it still comes down to something more fundamental. Community doesn't happen just because some people fill in profiles, even if they do it correctly and truthfully. Community is something that happens between specific people, not something that can be automated in a database. More >
