Are The Democrats Poised For Victory?47 comments

Bring yourself back to the point quite gently. And even if you do nothing during the whole of your hour but bring your heart back a thousand times, though it went away every you brought it back, your hour would be very well employed.

---St. Francis De Sales, On Meditation

It is important to see that the main point of any spiritual practice is to step out of the bureaucracy of ego. This means stepping out of ego's constant desire for a higher, more spiritual, more transcendental version of knowledge, religion, virtue, judgment, comfort or whatever it is that the particular ego is seeking.

"County Election" by George Caleb Bingham 1851

At my workplace the other day, a retired social studies teacher, in to substitute and an astute Republican, challenged us assembled Democrats in the lunchroom. We're in Ohio remember, where the gubernatorial election in November will decide between Democrat Ted Strickland, a sensible and friendly man, and Republican Kenneth Blackwell, deranged and perhaps crooked evangelist. Our Republican friend said, "If you guys can't win this time, you'll never win!"

Not counting the distinct possibility that both the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections were rigged, it would seem the Democrats have issues galore and an increasing advantage as the campaign season begins. But what do we see, what do we hear? I see business-as-usual, I hear snoring. Where is thundering oratory about corruption and injustice? I am not alone on the brink of dismissing the Democrats as out to lunch. What follows is a review of Ted Kennedy's new book, written by the publisher of Harper's Magazine.  More >

Former IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon has broken his relative silence, decrying the entire notion of a Palestinian state, and urging Israel to be strong rather than appease the global Jihad.  More >

 Civilization seems an Illusion.5 comments

Perhaps once there was a civlization called humanity but
alas no more. We pay lip service to the notion of civilization
but when it comes right down to it... the lines are drawn between "citizenry" and econmics. Mankind therebye has not created now a society or civilizaton but basically has turned the world into one big global "MARKETPLACE". Everything seems parceled and "measured" and "advertized" and sold, and has a value or price or notion of price. Damages. Yet some of the most precious things that defy price have not recieved the support of the materialists. Even though they may indeed be necessities of a sort. The market place does not recognize or pay for them because in a sense it doesn't have to. The value of nature, art, music, health have all been turned it to commodities of sorts and disected and anaylized and even faith seems at times to have become a commodity.

So this talk of a new civilization is moot.
What we need is a "NEW MARKET PLACE" ..... the dominant factor as even law can be bought it seems, witness celebrity justice or microsoft monopolyness with their deep pockets. It seems it is the depth of the pocket then that determines justice now.... and maybe thats the way it has to be or if not then it might be addressed by looking honestly at the market place and perhaps giving it some semblance of "conscience". A conscienscious and responsible market place has now to be formed.
The new "Green Market Place".... we cannot have a new civilization therefore with out first changing the market place. Because people despite what they say and do.... vote with their dollars. A store may be unethical it seems to its workers and the environment but no ones seems to care if at the end of the day it has the lowest price. Quality costs though and you do tend to get what you pay for and it you want to live in a junk yard then don't buy green because caring and peace, nature, true art and harmony costs. They have value though we tend to disregard that in favor of expediency and the short term.

I don't know ...

What have I said...

nothing you perhaps didn't already know.

but that if we want a new civ though we will have to pay for it and make it pay too and still to leave room for the priceless.

A day at the beach8 comments

The sunny weather today has driven me to go to the beach for the first time in the year, to enjoy this beautiful spring day close to the sea. I went to Perlora, a village on the Asturias coast, with green meadows and several small beaches.

Here are some photos to bring you the essence of this area in Northern Spain, and a bit of fresh breeze for those of you who live far from the sea :-)  More >

 Live Dog Burning Tests0 comments

I am sure you will be as horrified as I was to learn of this practice. Evidence indicates that live dog burning testing continues today in China. This is just one of thousands of animal and human rights abuses that continues in China today. At least in this case we can make our voices heard. Please also share this with as many of your friends and relatives as you can.

The horrific series of experiments in which dogs are being burned alive took place at the Third Military Medical University at Chongqing, China. The experiments appeared in the Chinese scientific journal: ŒZhonghua Shao Shang Za Zhi. NAVS and ADI have uncovered three experiments published since 1999 and believe the programme of research continues. The 3 experiments involved:-

1. 37 dogs burned with napalm - The pain of napalm is so excruciating that people have died from the pain alone. The pain felt by the dogs would have been unbearable. The dogs were then kept alive with their agonizing burns for three days. 72hours of hell.

2. 26 dogs were burned so severely that their brains swelled - In order to determine the value of scanning equipment in diagnosing brain swelling due to excess water (oedema) following burns, dogs were inflicted with third degree skin burns, over half of their bodies. Yet, scanning techniques such as MRI cause little or no suffering to people so it is difficult to understand why the information could not have been derived from studies of burns patients.

3. 24 dogs were deliberately scalded and suffered steam inhalation injuries – 24 mongrel dogs were used in an experiment in which 40% of their total body surface area was deliberately scalded, giving them third degree burns, and they were left alive for up to two days. Some of the dogs died from shock within 36 hours

What is MCS? A second time around -
picture12 May 2006 @ 21:01, by hgoodgame. Medicine, Healthcare
Before I continue with my 'tales of travel', it seemed a good idea to re-address an old issue, that of my fight with MCS. While many of the long-time members of NCN have already seen this, it may be of interest to new members.

This challenge added another whole layer of complexity to the trip taken.. And as I unfold the tale, it will explain some of what my reactions were caused by.

So. without further ado, here's the old log entry.  More >

Further gleanings from the long and winding road..
picture10 May 2006 @ 22:52, by hgoodgame. Travel
What may seem to be a message to turn back is often a test to see just how determined one is to take on a particularly difficult challenge.

This happened to me after moving here to my home; a tree fell across the bottom of the driveway, fortunately I knew someone (my ex) who cut it up and took it away, was coming back from visiting our son when we discovered it and so with a saw from the back of his truck, it was soon dismantled and out of there. (If a tree falls on your driveway and no one is there to hear it, did it really fall? hehe, I can tell you from experience, the answer is YES!) Then another fell into the pool where the water system partially originates, fortunately I'd met a young gardener who'd been helping me with clearing out the thickets, so I hired him take it out of there. Like I said, I get by with a little help from my friends. ;) After a few more hurdles, the path smoothed out.  More >

A micropayment system for blogs, indieKarma
Support your favorite independent blogs & websites - give a penny for their thoughts

How does this work? Easy. Join the indieKarma network and add one dollar to your account (for the first 5000 accounts, this dollar is free).

Each time you visit a website or blog on the indieKarma network, your account is seamlessly debited just one cent. It's the smallest of micro-payments, directly supporting the blog or website you're enjoying.

At the bottom of each page on any blog or website on the indieKarma network, you'll see a small "dock", with a message from the site. If you're browser is logged in, this will thank you for your support and quickly fade out for the rest of your visit. If your browser is not logged in, it will encourage your support at each page reload.

One cent may be an inconsequential sum to you, but it can make a world of difference to content creators running the independent blogs and websites you enjoy.
A fine idea. So, if I have 1500 visitors per day, that would net me $15, I suppose. If they all were members of indieKarma, which is a huge IF, of course. Here's what Jason Kottke says about it. Mostly very positive, but some concerns about the pop-up thing at the bottom being too intrusive, and whether it will gain critical mass. Anyway, I'm gonna give it a shot, since I think it is a basically good idea.  More >
