 Mining on the Moon0 comments
picture26 Nov 2001 @ 19:24, by ming. Space Exploration
According to this Yahoo article a group of private companies are looking towards starting mining operations on the moon within 10 years. Lots of things they haven't sorted out yet, though. The 1979 U.N. Moon Treaty stipulates that any wealth obtained from the moon by any space-faring nation must be distributed to all the people of the world. Hey, that sounds great. But the treaty was never ratified by the actual spacefaring nations like U.S. and Russia.  More >

A team at Columbia University Microsystem Engineering Laboratory has developed a 20W electrical generator powered by a hydrogen turbine just 4mm in diameter. For more details, read the Wired article or an older Popular Science article. The tiny generator is more efficient than any battery.  More >

 Ancestors involved in Ritual Murder!
26 Nov 2001 @ 19:00, by gyrfalcon. History, Ancient World
Tonight on T.V. was a program about Wizards it was actually called..." Real Wizards ; the search for Harry's ( meaning Harry Potter's) Ancestors" This program covered all historical references to wizardry including pre-celtic origins (26,000B.C.) and Drudic Activities. But the most amazing facts concerned the so called Bog People for example the Tolland Man. Apprently these people weren't workers or labourers but rather of the upper class. Furthermore lab analysis has proved that they had a mixture in their stomachs ( their last supper, given before their Ritual Slaughter) that contained over 20 different cereals, and that mixture included Ergot the bacteria which LSD was synthezised from. The Ergot insured that the victim was oblivious to the garroting or stabbing that would ritually end his life. See a picture of the Tollund man at this site...

 First Human Embryo Cloned1 comment
picture26 Nov 2001 @ 15:55, by ming. Medicine, Healthcare
U.S. scientists have succeeded in cloning the first human embryo. Meaning, they managed to put the full DNA of an existing person into an egg cell and stimulate it to continue growing as an embryo. The point doesn't seem for this to grow into a baby that will be born, but to be a source of stem cells, cells that have not yet become specialized, and that therefore potentially could be used anywhere in the body. Of course this is all VERY controversial. Article here  More >

 Cost getting you down?1 comment
25 Nov 2001 @ 18:01, by fleer. Old Age, Retirement
Cost of living getting you down? Maybe you just need to use some imagination. Beatrice Muller, 82, figured out that she could live a life of romantic luxury sailing around the world as a full-time resident of the famous QE2 - for no more than the cost of a mundane nursing home.

China wants to go to the moon0 comments
24 Nov 2001 @ 17:55, by ming. Space Exploration
China is firing up its space program, is planning on manned space flights by 2005, and eventually go to the moon. Article here. It is rather strange that other moon programs were dropped, so it is about time that we can have some public scrutiny of what is really there.

 Inventor Fair in Germany0 comments
24 Nov 2001 @ 17:50, by ming. Inventions
"Ideas, Inventions and New Products" in Nurembert is one of the biggest trade fairs for inventors. Article at Yahoo. How about a robot golf caddy? Anyway, I think we need to come another paradigm for inventors than to try to patent what they come up with. I think the patent system is destructive to human creativity, and it has to go.
