A few words are in order on practical aspects of the networking of
independent teams. Several people have expressed concerns on how it might
work.
My hope is that this can work mostly by spontaneous and voluntary links and
groupings. In its simplicity, the people who are interested in the same
things get together and work on them, and the people who aren't interested
in those things go somewhere else to what they particularly are into.
Friction often arises from people with clashing views being forced to be in
the same limited space. Ideas fight for the available space if they are
incompatible and there is nowhere else to go.
The plan here is to keep the unified agreement very simple and general and
open to diversity, and to segregate off particular discussions on what is
the best action to take, what is right/wrong, good/bad,
important/unimportant, etc..
Some of us have strong convictions related to what a new civilization
should be like, and might regard one factor or another as absolutely
essential and crucial. That is great, that can be a driving force for doing
something about it. However, it is not necessarily appropriate to spend a
lot of bandwidth convincing everybody else that you are right. The more
productive approach is that you either get together with some others who
wish to discuss what the most essential and crucial elements are, or simply
that you produce some tangible demonstrations of your ideas at work and you
present those once in a while.
The forum of everybody in the new civilization network is not meant for
discussions of what is right or wrong. It is mainly for practical matters,
such as locating others with a similar interest as you, for giving progress
reports on what is going on and what is available, to put out requests for
resources, to suggest new areas of interest, and for coordination and
administration purposes, and so forth.
The forming and joining of a team is voluntary. That is, you don't have to
join anything you don't want to be part of. Also, an existing team is free
to decide whether it wants a new member or not.
There are different kinds of teams. Some people here are already a tightly
knit team, maybe already working together in the same geographical area in
a company or other venture. Naturally they have no obligation to take on
anybody else, or to be availble for any particular kind of interaction,
unless that is what they want. It is fine if they just want to tell us a
little bit once in a while about what they are doing and accomplishing that
relates to new civilization.
Some teams are part of other networks or organizations too and might have
particular requirements or customs that you must adhere to.
Some teams will be an open group that would welcome anybody who's
interested in a certain area.
Some teams will have as their main activity e-mail discussions. Other teams
will mostly work on tangible activities out in the real world and might not
be much into discussion. Some teams or team members will not be available
by e-mail.
Any team can do whatever makes sense for it internally, interact in any way
that there seems to be agreement for.
Externally, between teams, and on the main new civ network mailing list, I
hope that the focus can be on action and on complete, useful information.
Lastly, if that isn't clear already, anybody can of course communicate
between themselves as they feel like it. Many voluntary links, across any
artificial boundaries, is generally a good thing.
