NCN has now existed for a couple of months.
Some things look very positive, some things aren't particularly working
yet. I think it would be useful to take an honest look at how we are doing
and to find some approaches that will actually get us somewhere.
My sense is that some people feel somewhat disconnected from NCN as a
group, or don't know what to do, or are waiting for something to happen.
I would very much like to hear what each of you have in mind should be
happening, what your concerns are, and any ideas you have for making the
network work.
Let me say again that this is a learning activity. I certainly don't have
all the answers on how to do everything. It is something we will have to
discover together.
One concern is that the push for the creation of new teams and for teamwork
amongst us here might be stiffling or clouding up what each of you already
are doing individually in your lives, or in any local groups that you are
part of.
We might possibly be better off sharing stories of what we already are
doing out in "real life" separate from our e-mail accounts. I am not sure.
E-mail discussions easily get into intellectual debates, which isn't really
what NCN is about.
What we are working out is in part the ground rules for how to make a
virtual community. At this point it looks like we need to do more than just
talk with each other on e-mail in order to make it happen.
One thing I have in mind is to have some face-to-face meetings. I picked
the San Francisco Bay area as a place to start, and it looks like we will
have an informal gathering in the weekend June 24-25. I would try to do
something similar in Los Angeles next.
I would recommend anybody else who are in physical proximity to each other
to look into the possibility of meeting face-to-face, or talk on the phone
and get to know each other. This doesn't imply any obligation to work
together on specific projects, but is simply to get more of a sense of who
the other people are, and to get the ideas more grounded in the tangible
world.
To respond to what I am saying here, either send a message to me, or join
the discussion list and post something there. Send a message to:

to ncndiscuss-l@newciv.org.
NCN is a blank canvas. You are all the artists. Let's together create
something beautiful, exciting and never before seen.
