((Editor's note: For those of you in other places of the U.S., or who
haven't heard about it, a "scandal" in the news this week is the revelation
that Hillary Clinton has worked with and received guidance from Jean
Houston (whom a number of you know personally, I know), and that she has
role-played having conversations with former first ladies and other
characters from history, and this is somehow supposed to be very
scandalous. Below is several messages from Ned Hamson about this, combined
into one message. By the way, let me personally concur with Ned and say
that I also consider Jean a brightly shining light working towards a new
civilization. And let me add another link:

Dear NewCiv colleagues:
Two dear friends of mine have been been smeared in the press over the last
week: Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jean Houston. I have worked with Jean for
the past ten years. She is a person with great heart and talent. She has
done much to help ease, tease, and shove people over into this new
civilization. The characterizations of her work as being similar to a
carnival mystic are childish and totally inaccurate. The holier than thou
covereage is threatening to ruin 30 some years of her work and her ability
to help people in the future. If you know her or her work, she needs your
moral support now. If you don't know of her work, I believe you can find
some of her materials at:
If you feel so moved, a note to your local newspaper on your understanding of
her work and work similar to it, would be much appreciated and may indeed
help

Just a few words more about Jean. You can find three wonderful articles by
her at this website: http://www.lightworks.com/LightsOnline/JeanHouston/

Sorry. I just found this and thought some would like to read this short
backgrounder on Jean Houston:
Philosopher educator Jean Houston has been for the last thirty years in the
forefront of efforts to bring new knowledge from psychology and
neuroscience into education and human development programs. A former
philosophy professor, Dr. Houston has taught at universities throughout the
U.S. and in many other countries. She has worked with governmental agencies
and the United Nations and has been keynote speaker at innumerable
conferences and gatherings of leaders of business, science and education.
Dr. Jean Houston was the protege and "adopted daughter" of the late
anthropologist Margaret Mead, who instructed her in the workings of
organizations and power structures in many different cultures. With the
late mythologist Joseph Campbell, Jean Houston frequently co-led seminars
and workshops aimed at understanding interrelationships between ancient
myths and
modern societies. Dr. Houston has also participated in "think tanks" and
other such gatherings with leading thinkers of our time in a variety of fields.
Dr. Houston is author or co-author of a dozen books in areas ranging from
mythology and psychobiography to applications of her own and others'
research in neural and sensory re-education, creativity and innovative
education. She has been for three decades director of The Foundation for
Mind Research, first in New York City and now in Pomona, New York.
Additionally, Jean Houston has made cross-cultural studies of educational and
healing methods in Asia and Africa. Her principal areas of interest apart
from her work are theater, archaeology and the philosophical, societal and
other implications of contemporary physics. Dr. Houston's mind has often
been called "a national treasure" and she has also been described as "the
greatest
American orator since William Jennings Bryan."
Jean Houston, Ph.D., is internationally known as a seminar leader and
consultant on human development. Her intensive, high-energy workshops blend
myth, history, philosophy and psychology with music, meditation and dance.
High ritual experiences are created that re-enact the great myths and help
participants to create their own story.
As past president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, Dr. Houston
has taught philosophy, psychology, and religion at Columbia University,
Hunter College, the New School for Social Research, Marymount College, the
University of California. In 1985 she was elected Distinguished Educator of
the Year by the National Teacher Educator Association. More recently, she
received the Gardner Murphy Award in Psychology, the Humanitarian of the
Year (1993) award from the INTA and the Lifetime Outstanding Creative
Achievement Award from
the Creative Education Foundation (1994).
She has written or co-authored fifteen books, including Public Like A Frog,
The Hero and the Goddess, The Possible Human, The Search for the Beloved,
and Godseed. In addition, she has worked at the grass roots as well as the
highest governmental and cultural levels in over 40 countries, helping
local and international groups and agencies in their quest for cultural
growth and social transition. Recently, she has been working with UNICEF to
implement some of these programs. Since the early 1980s, she has guided a
year-long school in
spiritual studies based on the ancient mystery schools.
