A 'salon' is a regular gathering of distinguished people who meet to talk,
socialize, philophize, pursue artistic or literary endeavors, start
revolutions and stuff like that.
It is an old concept that has seen a renaissance within the last few years.
I think particularly after some articles in the magazine Utne Reader in 91.

Now, I've been looking for ways of inspiring more face-to-face meetings of
distinguished people such as you NCN members, in addition to our virtual
interactions on the Internet, and I think salons is one of the possible
avenues.
We are going to start a salon in Los Angeles with a new civilization theme,
and I would love to see similar activities in many other areas.
If any of you are already engaged in salons or similar regular gatherings
of inspired people, that others here might be interested in, drop me a note
and I'll compile a list of what is going on in different areas.
And if any of you would like to start something like that in your area,
let's pool our ideas and resources and make it happen. To start with, there
is a growing list of areas where you are likely to find other NCN members
close by who might be interested in also meeting physically. And of course
we're not the only kinds of people worth hanging out with.
Any of you in Los Angeles are welcome at the first salon here next
Saturday. Please let me know if you plan on coming, as space is somewhat
limited for this first one.
