Thanks for your messages and feedback on salons. I will summarize some of
it here, and the easiest is if I include some of your messages. I hope that
is OK.
For those who've asked for lists of NCN members in your area, I will send
that out to you separately.
Here is a list of what is going on in different areas, or who would like to
start some kind of salon.

LONDON, ENGLAND
This is from Nicholas Albery <rhino@dial.pipex.com>:
"For the last few years a group of us have run a salon here in North London
modelled on the Utne Reader salons, meeting in each other's homes and
sharing food and drink afterwards, with themes normally along the lines of
'.............., its role in our lives and in our societies', so people can
be both personal and revealing whilst also considering wider social
implications. The .............. can be anything from 'Polygamy' to
'Hierarchy' to 'Peak Experience'. Normally about 15 to 20 people come.
Anyone in London wanting to take part please phone 0181 208 2853.
I also organise a sort of walking salon, where we go walking in the country
every Saturday, and spend a long time over lunch and tea. We call ourselves
'The Walking Talking Never Ending Perpetual Motion Encounter Group', also
known as 'The Adventure and Romance Agency', also known as 'The Gourmet
Walkers'."

WASHINGTON D.C., VIRGINIA, MARYLAND
This is from Lawry de Bivort <debivort@umd5.umd.edu>:
"Are there many people in NCN in the Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia
area? If there were a sufficient number, we might try a salon here."
-----
Flemming: Incidentally I met a gentleman named Larry Schuster last year at
a seminar in Virginia who runs a salon in Washington D.C. and I'm getting
their newsletter every month. Here is some of the info:
"The Capitol Hill Salon began about 5 years ago, inspired by the Utne
Reader's theme issue on salons, and a desire by friends to meet monthly to
stay in touch, meet new friends, and to learn more about the world from
each other. Now there are more than 200 people on the mailing list, and
lately the locations have been in Adams Morgan, McLean and Bethesda. People
are married, single, all ages, cultures. Next Salon: Saturday, September
28th, 7PM. RSVP to Larry Schuster at 202/234-0979. Subscription to Salon
News: $10 for one year to: Larry Schuster, 2015 Allen Pl, NW, Washington
D.C. 20009"
>From the same newsletter:
"UTOPIA SALON LAUNCHES: The brand new Utopia Salon will meet Tuesday, Oct.
8, 7:30PM at the Falls Church home (near Tyson's Corner) of salonkeeper
Ronni Perry, 703/883-2052. Address: 7614 Mantera St., Apt 202.
RonniP999@aol.com. Meets monthly, 2nd Tuesday. Through discussions, films,
books, and various special events, the participants will each begin to
chart their own personal utopia. Future meetings will involve discussions
of Utopian literature (e.g., Thomas More's book "Utopia", Atlantis and
other mythological civilizations, Science Fiction Utopias, etc.);
presentation and discussion of Utopian films (e.g. "Lost Horizon",
"Brigadoon", "Enchanted April", etc.); Utopian art and design (e.g. visits
to galleries, drawing and discussing our own Utopias); Utopian places
(Tahiti, Sri Lanka, etc.); as well as possible visits to nearby intentional
communities (Twin Oaks, Claymont Court, Amish and Shaker Communities, etc.)"

SOUTH CAROLINA
From: Michael Whitehead <mtwhite@cpis.net>:
"While, I'm sorry that I can't make the trip to LA (being in South Carolina
might have something to do about it) I'd be very interested if there are
others in SC that are interested (yes I use that word too much) in forming
a salon."

AUSTIN, TEXAS
From: Julie Vaughan <jvaughan@utxvms.cc.utexas.edu>:
"I would be interested in such events, possibly being the contact/organizer
in the Austin, Texas area. Any ideas on how to find others in the area with
such interests? My one concern would be How/What to do; if I take on this
responsibility I would need some major help!!"

SAN FRANCISCO
>From Willard Van De Bogart <portal@netcom.com>:
"Earth Portals is of couse very interested in the exchange of ideas which
promotes a better planet. Many of the links in the Portal Net (including
New Civilization) are dedicated to assisting people. In particular I have
just added GAIA Global Action for Internet Advocates
http://www.earthportals.com/gaia.html. I would love to join in as an
action component and have the facilities at Internet Alfredo
http://www.ina.com/alfredo.
This is San Francisco's newest Salon and it's a perfect place to do this. I
conduct journeys on a 48 inch NEC in a lounge area and we could pick dates,
use CU SEE Me and this would be the Northern Out post. How does that
sound Fleming? Wilard
Willard Van De Bogart Let us understand that
The Portal Market we are cosmically-endowed
2267 Sacramento Street #2 links in the great chain of being.

And from Fred Cook <fcook@pop.igc.apc.org>:
"I have been meeting with specific invited groups of people over the past
few years as part of cooperative efforts in support of authors. We read a
chapter, meet and give encouragement and critical feedback, then take
another chapter, then go back to the beginning - until the book is written,
edited, polished and finally published. The Quickening of America by
Frances Moore Lappe and Paul Martin DuBois is one such project which is out
on the bookstands. (I preferred the working title: Living Democracy: A
Power Users Guide). C'est l'vie.
I also meet with people for periodic seminars, cooperative classes, etc.
such as the "Macro Analysis" type seminar. The book Building a Peace
System, ed. by Robert Irwin, is an example of such a process. I'm working
on an update for the turn of the century and have been thinking of running
another cycle here in the Bay Area. (What does a person need to know in
order to be a responsible planetary and bioregional citizen?)"

LOS ANGELES
From: BURT WILSON <futurecon@earthlink.net>:
"I love the idea of salons. When I lived in a community (commune) in the
70's we had a salon every Friday night. We invited people over to
talk--activists--and traded ideas on different subjects. Often we showed a
movie such as "Lost Horizon"--actually rented a projector and all!"

might be of interest to NCN members, let me know and I'll put them on the
next update. And any more of you who are interested in starting salons or
