The New Civilization Peace Pole (translations wanted)
-----------------------------------------------------
On January 1st, 1998, I prepared the mound and pillar
for something that is nowadays known as a 'peace pole'.
Wooden pillars have been erected many thousands of years
ago in India, symbolizing the connection between heaven,
earth, and underworld. They have been used as burial
markers or precious relics. Similar constructions have
been erected at spiritually important sites and were
called 'caitya', however the name 'stupa' became
commonplace.
The 'New Civilization Peace Pole' marks the burial
of the 'old' civilization and the beginning of a new
one, whichever shape it ultimately will take.
It is intended to express the good will and the diversity
of a New Civilization.
The square part of the pole is exactly 2000 millimeter
long (that's about six feet for the nonmetric amongst us).
The centuries are marked and there are dark spots at the
years of major wars and upheaval.
The top of the pole is a smoothed pyramid, representing
the future, a harmonization of the square part, the past.
The four sides contain large inscriptions in Sanskrit
(to represent a major cradle of civilization), in English
(to represent the contemporary civilization), in Klingon
(to symbolically include all civilizations in the Universe),
and in Interlingua (to represent international communication
in the future).
The English text says "May Peace Prevail". (the 'on earth'
part has been intentionally omitted because of its
restrivtive aspect).
Beyond the basic incriptions, I envision individual inscriptions
in many different languages. Rather than have a list of
many translation, I think it is much better if every inscription
is combined with an individual pledge for peace in the new world
of the future.
If you'd like to contribute a translation of 'May Peace Prevail'
in your own language, please send the translation (or GIF
file), your full name, and place of residence, via e-mail to
Max Sandor (max@transmillennium.net). The translated pledges
and the names will be engraved into the pole and published at
http://www.transmillennium.net/peacepole/
(still under construction).
Thank you for your attention and, of course, for your pledges
for a peaceful future in this, our New Civilization to come!
MAY PEACE PREVAIL!
Max
