NCN must surely be as different as it is percieved to be by each and everyone who uses it! 5 Sep 2003 @ 12:55 by invictus : I think... You're essentially right, Craig : ) . And Scotty. The {link:http://www.new-civi.most.org.pl/jhs/newciv/charter.htm|original intent}? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks Andy. Interesting reading. 5 Sep 2003 @ 13:42 by shawa : Link Thanks for the link, Andy. What was in the beginning is not necessarily what appears six years later. In the absence of "inspired leadership" as someone recently commented, who knows what NCN really is ? :-) 5 Sep 2003 @ 14:14 by craiglang : A forum for ideas ...is what I see as the biggest NCN role. Especially in net-space, when you get N people you get N visions and N**2 interactions. It wasn't really clear to me from reading the link, just what Ming's actual vision was of a New Civilization. But I maybe that was actually part of the goal - to let the vision determine itself based upon synergy between the work of individuals. So, the question that follows from this is, is this what people want NCN to be? Or is there a different vision now? And if there is the desire for a set of pro-active results, then how do we best go about achieving them? Is the team approach the best? Or are there other ways? 5 Sep 2003 @ 14:45 by shawa : Craig It´s not about "NCN", it´s about US PEOPLE. What do we want to do ? Where is each one of us going ? How can we collaborate (yes, even in real life). How best can we use the TOOL that "NCN" is ? Does the tool work for you ? For me ? For us ? "NCN" as itself, doesn´t go anywhere. Doesn´t do anything. It´s just a technical means to WEAVE threads, and people, and situations. Where does each one of us want/need to go ? And how can we use the tool to organize and materialize these needs? Those are the real questions, that CAN be answered. :-) 5 Sep 2003 @ 14:56 by craiglang : Good point Shakti, great point. The first half of finding the right answer is to figure out how to ask the right question. Thanks for your observaton. 6 Sep 2003 @ 07:22 by ming : NCN I originally had certain expectations of what would happen. Which didn't all happen. But the point was always that it is a bottom up kind of thing, which would be the sum of what the members are inspired to do. I thought that people would choose different areas of focus and specialization, and then work together on allowing something bigger to emerge from that. Not any one plan or agenda. Rather like we would each take care of some particular area, while staying in good communication, and then we'd discover that the whole actually can work. Sort of like: "I'll build a solar power station", "I'll start a school", "I'll cook some soup". OK, I expected it more intelectual than that. Like, experts on solar power would aggregate in one place, healers in another, people working on new economies in a third. And then we'd realize that we actually have the expertise to really do something with that. At first, it seemed like that. But it wasn't long before I was really surprised and horrified by the fact that many who joined were looking to me personally to somehow come up with the plan for doing all of that. And I had the uncomfortable job of trying to figure out how to gently guide or inspire this thing without ending up as its hierarchical leader, which would have been very far from what I imagined. See, at first there was no elaborate member area with virtual workgroups. There was a few mailing lists, and particularly there was the main mailing list, where I sort of gathered news about what was happening, and sending it out to everybody. I acted as a sort of journalist/secretary/speech writer. Which many people were really happy with, but it also reinforced the idea that it was all somehow MY thing. So, I stopped using the main mailing list, and instead I built the member area you see today, and I myself keep a low profile. There are many nice things about that. But it is not clear how we might get from there to something bigger, or if that is even what it is about. I'm quite happy letting it be what it is, and evolve as it does. And if the whole membership as it is now somehow feels it is time to make new things happen together, and if that succeeds, that would be a more solid foundation than if it was just somebody, like me, who talks up the possibility before its time. Until such a time, it is perfectly fine and useful in itself to have spaces for diverse groups, and to explore co-existence in the spaces in-between. It doesn't really matter at this point what I had in mind that it would be 8 years ago. What matters is the life that is here now, and how that is evolving. 6 Sep 2003 @ 07:37 by scotty : Got to agree ! ...and that it IS evolving ! 6 Sep 2003 @ 08:21 by martha : thanks craig and ming for your views on ncn. I have been giving ncn a great deal of thought recently and also the group in Santa Barbara trying to work as a co-creative group. There seems to be lot of circling around. Not sure about the movement though. Ming hit upon the fundamental problem IMHO in the structure of a hierarchial system. We are conditioned that way and I wonder why.Control or are we a species that naturally responds to strong energies that some humans carry? Each person here at ncn gives off an energy uniquely their own. Some are strong and bellow forth while others take the humerous road. Still others prefer controlling tactics or fear mongering. The problem lies in being accepting of all energies here as long as we have a central purpose. Of what??? A brave new world? A new consciousness reflective of the earth we invision? It is also very apparant that people do respond to positive energy even when they are called to task. If one believes that every thought and deed reflects out upon the earth then it puzzles me greatly by all the fractions that occur here. I read a lot of talk but sense very little of actually living a new consciousness. It is through living the change, not talking, making rules, playing games, that ncn will shift. There can be great energy formed by a group committed to living the way. Sorry don't mean to be preachy. So in answer to craig I would say there is shifting around at ncn but no change, Oh I forgot to mention that we have the ingredients here. It requires an open heart and committment and honoring each person for the energy they provide. 6 Sep 2003 @ 09:06 by craiglang : Thanx all Thanks for your comments. Good to hear peoples' views, and get a very meaningful dialog going. I think we can learn alot from that. 15 Sep 2003 @ 07:36 by jmarc : henry ford once said that the worse thing about the design of his first automobiles, was the little screw on the carburateur which adhusted oxygen and gas flow. He said that more people screwed up their engines by monkeying around with that screw. But people always had to mess with that screw, thinking they could get better performance. Sometimes it is best to leave things alone. To tweak or not to tweak, that is the question. Working within the framework designed by the engineer may be the best way to get optimum performance.
