Global rights pledge under considerable strain: UN

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour has criticised the global response to terrorism, warning that the international community's pledge to uphold freedom and security is under "considerable strain".
"As we commemorate International Human Rights Day 2004, the vision and the promise contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are under considerable strain," Ms Arbour said.
"Few of us are free from fear; many us are still not free from want.
"The sinister shadow of terrorism is generating a confused response, unanchored in the principles that have guided us in the search for a proper balance between our desire for collective security and our need for liberty and individual freedom."
UN human rights officials have repeatedly raised concerns about detainees held in the US military base in Guantanamo Bay as well as abuse in the US-run Abu Ghraib jail in Baghdad.
Ms Arbour's office has also sharply criticised mass human rights violations in Sudan's strife-torn western region of Darfur this year, where 1.5 million people have fled attacks during an 18-month-old conflict.
She is urging the UN's member states to protect human rights and not to become "prisoners of a culture of fear and an ideology of exclusion and arrogance".
Ms Arbour also sides with a UN reform panel, noting that grievances have been nurtured by poverty, abuse and intolerance while terrorist groups prey on weak states.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a global pledge to protect life, liberty and security, was adopted by the UN's member states on December 10, 1948.
A rotating group of 53 UN member states meet once a year in Geneva in the UN Commission on Human Rights to review observance of those principles.
Human rights groups have sharply criticised the assembly in recent years for failing to take action against states that repeatedly resort to abuse.

RIGHTS

THERE ARE...... No rights, save those that are of a democratic and lawful
nature, for as such then, the rights of the one, are as the rights of the many.

22 Dec 2004 @ 00:27 by astrid : WHAT?!?!?!?
Of course there's Rights! and one day they will be so Selfevident , so we don't need to have this discussion anymore. But for now and in order to get there we HAVE to do what Ms. Arbour is doing: never shut up about our RIGHTS!
Don't forget that the Rights for "The One" ARE RULED (in) BY UNIVERSAL IMMUTABLE LAWS, BUT THEY ARE ACTIVE ONLY THE EXTENT THEY ARE ACKNOWLEDGED AND "DRAWN DOWN" INTO OUR PLANETARY MATRIX BY HUMANS!!! This is exactly why we all should be loud as hell about our Rights all the time!
That is correct: Universe does NOT make a distinction between One and Many.To UNIVERSE ALL IS ONE TRUTH/ONE VERSION.
I became one with the Light.
And then I knew
They are all the same.
All One Soul.
I am, as they are.
We are One.

22 Dec 2004 @ 14:09 by spiritseek : GLOBAL RIGHTS
One for all and all for one! What one does snowballs and affects others,so we should keep this in mind when we respond to conflict. We should also remember it also affects us too. If we want a better world it starts within ourselves.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
AND MAY ALL YOUR WISHES COME TRUE.

22 Dec 2004 @ 15:19 by swanny : Unfortuneately
Unfortuneately rights work both ways
in that there are some people who think they have the
"right" to abuse and command others.....not realizing
that there are some rights which are not legitmate.
Unless rights are common, global, sustainable and
benefit all then they are not really rights but the abuse
and miappropriation of rights.

22 Dec 2004 @ 15:27 by swanny : As Well...
As well there are those that feel, think and 'know"
they have a right and are entitled to have it better
and more than most. Is this a good application of
the rights issue, surely not.

22 Dec 2004 @ 21:04 by astrid : That's it Swanny!....
...This is exactly why we who know the Cosmic Laws that define our BirthRIGHTS must continue ever louder to SHOUT them out tfor ALL to hear -AND to stop scraping our foot in the sand in front of so called Authorities when they spit out BS. We have to stop pretending as if they had just said the most profound Wisdoms!.... WHOM does benefit to brown-nose anybody?... Entitled my ass! is what i would say to "W" et Co.! Hypocricy, cruelty etc does NOT qualify to earn/not even deserve MY reverence. Hell no!

23 Dec 2004 @ 05:24 by spiritseek : I see
we have within each of us the knowledge of truth and righteousness. Consciousness that leads and informs us right from wrong,I believe this is in every human soul.Whether we choose to obey this is another thing for we have free will. Then comes the question, How does a human being become imperfect when it was created perfect?
