We speak a different language than most of them, and it had nothing to do with what we did, even though they do some of the things we started like BMX, and skateboards. The ones that are most responcable for how the kids today are, is the media, the people makeing cartoons. Hi Ed...I'm not sure that we fail anyone but ourselves. And, even then, we may only perpetuate the bad feelings we have about ourselves by thinking we are failures. Perhaps our attitudes could change so that we all feel that we are doing the best we can under the circumstances that we have going for us. For example, early on, I often felt that my dad failed me by using punishment rather than encouragement. Consequently, I became frighted of him and was not able to interact honestly and openly with him. Now I know that he did the best he knew how at the time. He acknowledged this before he died and we hugged and expressed our unconditional love for one another. Thanks for raising this issue. We just didn't have the same instant media we have today. When you add those two elements together, it breeds the monster we've got now. Yes, parenting has a lot to do with it. But when you send a kid to school with just a pencil wearing trousers, shirt and shoes, he meets up with the crowd who have ipods, cell phones w/ instant messaging, glitter pens, and all the latest cool clothes inspired by prison inmate-worshipping rap stars, etc. Then you've got the 20-somethings out there who choose to continue their adolescent behavior rather than grow up. It's not easy to reverse this. The wealthy politicians will always have suitable replacements to carry on the feudal system, and Antoinette's infamous order, "Let them eat cake." Just keep giving the people SUV's, games and Hollywood. Keep them from the secondary education system. LOL Speaking for the under 40 crowd ( whoever they are), they would probably agree that the elders have failed them but doesn't every generation say that in one way or another? And we the generations have seen the "discintegration" of the "twoness relationship" or is it an evolvement.... there are many more single parent families for some that is perhaps good but it is a fundemental shift from the way things used to be. I suppose it was necessity in the old days to "stay together" for the sake of the children yet I suppose "tech" has made alternatives possible yet are we or the kids any better off because of it. Perhaps I should just let sleeping dogs lie... and perhaps it was necessary to fail here because in failure there is growth as well ....no? I have failed "holywood" and holywoods expectations" the fodder of my youth. I have failed to live up to the holywood grandeurs.
