When discovering and joining NCN 9 months ago, a new lease of life with freedom had just been given to me, after 30 years’ struggle and 7 year’s treatment. So whilst here now in abundant middle age having not so long ago been accused of still looking 12, a life bane, tumbling over NCN was a God send. Much much fun, and much catching up on Life was actually received from this cyber deck space !

To express my gratitude to all and sundry contributors, albeit unwittingly to this exponential, a particular link has been chosen which may be of interest. Not seen before by me, and apologies to those who have, the subject matter is

Rasa, the Sanskrit Literary Theory -

As applied to Hemingway:

The Old Man of the Sea, and A Farewell to Arms

[link]

This is an attempt to weld an American literary (modern) tradition to ancient Sanskrit theory!! Some of it (163 pages of normal A4) I have read, it is a very brave attempt indeed at trying to make a point. This aside, none the less, it is a vital expose of this rarely known literary tradition of the East. I have read on the traditions of Chinese art, and those of Japanese as well, but my knowledge of Indian literature is limited(!) to the Mahabarata epic, the Sacred Work of Hinduism. The Indian film production of this was shown in the the late 80’s during the broadminded days of BBC2, all 100 hour long episodes most of which I watched, enraptured.

All the details of GREGORY P FERNANDO, the author of this D Phil thesis, are in the link.

His “… research study aims to provide scholars of Literature and Literary Criticism a unique outlook. Literary Criticism and Literature constitute two sides of a coin. Both are co-related just like breathing is essential to living and primary matter to substantial form. …..The account I offer here is not a succession of studies on the thought of any critics in particular although some prominent individual positions must play its role. It’s an agenda of critical discussion in the AESTHETIC world. Application of Rasa, the Sanskrit Literary Theory, in spite of its dynamic nature, has remained mostly in the Indian sub-continent without shedding much light in the international arena. So I’ve attempted to expound Rasa, the Sanskrit Literary Theory and apply to Hemingway’s ‘The Old Man and The Sea’ and ‘A Farewell to Arms’. Rasa, the Sanskrit Literary Theory is very ancient and dynamic in nature.”

This is especially given to those who chatted personably, aimably and Muse-ably, chosen with you in mind as being an item within your own domains somewhere, with which you would not normally trouble over, and therefore fulfills the idea of GIFT or PRESENT in thanks-a-million.

A good word about NCN!
I'll get to the hindu theory later, I've got my head in a trolley at the moment.

I did not expect to find this kind of information and enjoyed it all the more. That's really one way to open one's mind.

my comment so far, much reading still left, is based on my own reading of the Greek epics, tragedies, comedies, poets, and historical commentators plus modern critiques on all of these, plus the Roman copies and developments(retrogrades) on Greeks'. The commentpertaining to this category in the thesis is by no means exhaustive. It would suggest that the lecturers assisting this work were not in a postion to provide the rigour necessary for him to address this aspect in the thesis. (He seems to come from the Yemen, so it is all rather remarkable). I also believe that in order to critique literature and art etc, it is best to be an artist one's self, this is one of my chief criticisms re architectural critique, the lecturers, some of whom are just theorists, without any artist capability at all, are not able to percieve all the connections particularly the paradoxical ones, usually key to good works. The development of architectural designs requires thought processing in 3 D automatically, this is greatly aided by having drawn the human form in early years say, being the most complex form to do, compared to the square. Students to architecture will be unable to make this distinction, neither will they have their real artistic ability necessarily encouraged at all, and if so not in the correct direction. Special insights to developmental stages are known to occur in particular circumstances, the artist learns this under his own drive, or the artist component of the architect, and certain schools are aware of this and sustain it within their criticism.

However, having said this, the Rasa Thesis is a first, and therefore breaks new ground for this reason in English language, it is always up to succeeding studies to take such subjects further, so it value shows for this reason.

The first reading or acquainting with any subject always remains at a basic level, with time if interest allows, the mind becomes more accustomed to the considerations and notices their applications to other items as an added understanding. On any re-reading, on the subject, by yet another author, the exponential grasp immediately becomes recognisable, a mushrooming of vision within that idiom.

Wishing many mushrooms to many readers, and hoping for further comments during time, to collect here.
