An appeal to people outside the United States to break US imperial power

NOTE: Please translate this into as many languages as possible, and distribute as widely as possible.

This series of suggestions is written because my country is on a path that will first destroy other societies — upon which we depend — and the biospheric basis of life itself; and this means eventually our own society.

Our society now — an imperial society — is deeply alienated, desperately unhappy, and thoroughly indoctrinated into the acquisitive individualism that creates that alienation and unhappiness.

We continue down this path because the weight of the system gives it such enormous inertia. We need you to do these things, not just to ensure your own futures… but for our own good.

The United States now exists as a parasite upon the rest of the world. In this system, this political entity called the United States of America is not only a parasite, but a parasite that is destroying its own host.

There is only one outcome in the end for such a relationship; we will all perish together. With the help of the people of the world — and I will outline ten ways you can help us — we can all escape this fate.

Each of us — with the destruction of US imperial power — will be in a better position to work for a sustainable and indpendent future for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren.

(1) If there is a US military base in your country, begin a concerted campaign to get rid of it. These bases are exercises of imperial power against your own sovereignty. They are creating base-economies of crime, corruption, and prostitution. They are environmental disasters. Wage a sharp political struggle to make them untenable.

(2) If there are US companies, be they factories, financial offices, or retail outlets, in your country, organize sustained boycotts of them.

(3) If you live in a country that owes an external debt to the US or the US-controlled International Monetary Fund, begin a fight to either default on that debt outright, or secure low-interest or no-interest loans from other countries to pay down the principle. Your nations’ debt is your peoples’ slavery.

(4) Boycott any American agricultural products being dumped on your national markets; and wage a political fight to stop them coming in. US industrial agricultural corporations are heavily-subsidized and predatory monstrosities that destroy the environment and are used as a weapon to destroy your local, traditional agriculture. Ending agriculture for export and supporting your own subsistence and local market agriculture is necessary to break your dependency upon and subjugation to the United States. Fight for you nations’ land; and do not let it become an export platform for dollar-crops in the US market.

(5) Boycott American cultural products. They are propaganda aimed at turning your children into mindless consumers and your nations into obedient colonies.

(6) Make these political issues at home. Fight politicians who are called “pro-American,” This means they are stooges for US-based transnational corporations or for the US state.

(7) Fight to nationalize your most valuable natural resources; and support politicians who will abrogate agreements that allow US finance capital unlimited access to your national markets.

(8) Try to close down any projects that are run out of the US Embassy by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). These projects are designed to drain talented local people away from national independence movements, and the USAID works closely with the Central Intelligence Agency.

(9) Expose and resist any political activity by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), also operating in concert with the US Embassy. This is a front organization for the purpose of engineering elections outcomes in your nation that are seen as favorable to US transnational corporations and the US state.

(10) Mount massive political efforts directed at US Embassies everywhere that oppose the US occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, and demand not only withdrawal, but that no US bases be left behind.

NOTE: I have not called for violence in any of these suggestions. These are generic recommendations.

Used pc’s from day one and the amount of time spent fixing them just to run right think I missed a year or two.Tried a mac and have not spent 1 minute fixin or formating etc. Asta la vista

I bought a 12″ Powerbook (at great expense) around a year ago, used Macs in College (fishtank iMacs to 20″ flatscreen iMacs), and here is what I learned…

Ten things I hate about Macs:

1) The one-button mouse. Yes, you can get a two or more button mouse, but the track-pad built in to the laptop is freakin’ useless (and painful). Whoever says “Apple-click” is just as simple as (or, for some strange people, simpler than!) “right-click” clearly has no understanding of usability.

2) Click me, I look pretty. Why are there so many dialogue boxes that cannot be dismissed with space/enter/escape, or use arrow keys/tab/whatever to change selections? I’m sure there must be a design rule for Macs that says they should work, but the fact is so many don’t and it is a real pain.

3) Enter key = “rename”? WTF? Who would want to rename everything in the Finder as the default operation? How do I just open it, man? Apple-O? Thanks, that’s really handy.

4) Keyboard text navigation/selection seems to be different in every program. Apple-arrow, Ctrl-arrow, command-arrow… which is it?

5) The Menu Bar. Okay, there’s just one menu bar. Could probably learn to live with that over time. Not being able to get to it is frustrating… Wait, yes you can… it’s as easy as pressing Ctrl F2. My god, genius. That is so amazingly helpful I’m falling over myself. People with various disabilities must love it. (If there is some “acceibility feature that makes this easier, that should tell someone this is a non-accessible feature!)

6) Files being opened by the “creating” application. I might have some images to look at. All JPEGs. Why must some of them open in different applications (by default)? Same with HTML or other files - some open in the browser (as one might generally expect) while others bring up your editor. This became extremely painful in the web building process where several applications might be used to work on various types of files. It must confuse the hell out of novices.

7) Keyboard layout (with respect to common shortcuts, eg Cut, copy and paste). What fingers/digits do you use to press “Apple-X” or “Apple-C”, for example? Do you use two hands? Or do you, like I found myself doing, hold your thumb on the Apple and curl your hand over it to press the other key? This is really bad for you (not at all ergonomic), and yet what is essentially forced by the layout and/or choice of shortcut keys.

8) In Xcode, at least on the little 12″ screen, the text antialiasing made it difficult to tell the difference between “=” and “-”. That is shockingly bad and should be addressed. “Get a bigger screen” is not addressing the problem.

9) Jump-scrolling in the code editor. Maybe something to just get used to, but I found it disorienting and often inconvenient to have the text jump a bunch of lines when I tried to go past the last displayed line (similarly going upwards). Often I wanted to position code in the window to read a certain section together, but found I had to use the mouse to scroll to just the right spot.

10) Not having a background to certain programs, especially those such as photoshop. Sure, having floating toolbars, etc is handy, but why can’t I have a nice plain backdrop behind it all? The mess of the Finder, other applications, etc showing between my active windows is extremey distracting (and accdental click-outs are common). “Fullscreen mode” is not enough - I like to be have an image (or multiple images) in a (resizable, scrollable, etc) window while in “Fullscreen” mode. Surely I am not the only one. I resorted to opening a dummy image and having that in “Fullscreen” mode behing the image I was working on.

I am well aware of there being many things to hate about PCs. Crashing is a favourite. In my personal experience (expecially with the Macs at college), Macs crash just as much, if not more. The operating system might not have lost it most of the time, but the application crashing is mostly all you care about when working on something.

As for Eric’s 6000 trashed PCs, you will find that if you don’t buy cheap-arse PCs to “save money” (and instead spend, say, a similar amount as you have done on Macs) you will find they function just as well and reliably.
