5 Oct 2009 @ 19:44 I started my car, rolled out of the garage and headed to the city. Comfortably drove off, wistling with the music - then I though I would give a call to the car mechanic and order that part I needed. So I reached for my mobile into my ladies purse - a deep, dark place for unknown items waiting to reemerge to the light... I groped around in the purse while driving, tried to feel my familiar little handy. Except, it was not there. My hand looked for it in vain, it could not find anything shaped like a smartphone in any of the misterious pockets, where it usually hides. I looked furter, handling the wheel with one hand, groping around in the bag desparately, then I poured the content of my purse on the seat - but the site of my handy was simply absent from the pile. In deep terror I realized, that for the first time in this century, I am out in the world without a mobile phone. The immediate impulse to turn around and drive home I suppresses somehow. I had an appointment in town, I had carry on despite any dangers. But the fear grew stronger. What if I needed a phone?! Oh, relax, I told myself, there are so many people on the road, in the town, I can just ask them to land me their mobile if I needed something. In another shock it dawned on me that I do not know the phone numbers of any of my friends or acquaintances, as they are all stored in that very smartphone! The only item I could recall was the emergency number, 211. Or was it 112? or 911? Not sure... My god, my life is at peril. I tried to concentrate on driving again. On the way I unconsciously reached for the phone two or three more times, wanting to handle some urgent impulses to call someone - relizing again and again that I do not have a phone on me... Somehow I made it, arrived to the big shopping mall in the city. Walking through the mall I felt sort of naked. I was walking close to the walls, looking down, trying to get by unnoticed. What if they can feel, that I am without a phone? What if they find out, that I have no way of reaching anyone?! I managed to get through the appointment, a bit embarrassed and hiding the fact that there is something wrong with me. Then I sneaked down to the food plaza to bite something - all this stress really arose my hunger. Sitting there eating some wonderful spicy Indian curry, which was rather Pakistani, I forgot about the phone for a few minutes. And then, suddenly, something changed. Just between my ears, as usual. A new sense of freedom started to emerge. Yes, I am without a mobile phone - but see, I am still alive! Look world, look people, here I am, no phone! So you can try, but you cannot reach me! Noone can bother me with a trilling signal, SMS, call or anything - yay! No radiation, no electromagnetic distortion fields. No... Oh, that everyone around me SMS-ing or walking with a phone on an ear, or walking around like talking to themselves into their blootooth set? Okay, maybe there is still some radiation or fields. But at least they cannot call ME! I drove home - feeling free, brave and awfully proud, because I made it: four hours worth of survival tour into the wild, wild world, without any mobile means of telecommunication!
