OK, its time again to invite you to send in donations for supporting the
maintenance of the online resources of NCN.
I don't really like doing that, so I don't do that very often. Specifically
I usually don't get around to asking for anything before the bills stack up
and I don't know how to pay them.
Thank you to those of you who have sent in donations earlier. I appreciate
it very much and it is helpful.
Essentially what is at issue is the ongoing connection fees for the two
servers and the T1 line that all the NCN webpages and mailing lists and the
member database is running on. We have an exceptional deal on the
connection, but it still amounts to $650/month. Julie Solheim and I cover
part of that by hosting some commercial websites on the server. But
unfortunately not all of it.
There's no mandatory cost for being a member of NCN. But, if you like it
and you would like to contribute, I suggest a donation of $20 or more per
year. More is better, of course, but you have your own bills to pay, I'm
sure.
I mentioned earlier that if you send in a donation we're happy to provide
some more personalized services for you, such as a simple webpage or an
e-mail alias in one of our domains, if you need or want it. I'm planning
some automated ways of supporting that, which I'm not done with. But if any
of you want to take us up on that offer, and I didn't get back to you, make
sure you remind me.
Ideally, the NCN facilities should be self-sustaining. I.e. it would be
nice if it just paid for itself so that NCN could expand to many more
members and actitivities without having to worry about how it would be paid
for. But I'm not going to bug you with endless fund raising, so you'll only
get a message like this once in a rare while.
