NCN: Projects XI

These are some more assorted projects. Notice that there's no particular
judgement about what's worthwhile to do here. The main thing is that you're
doing what you want to do. If its a business, an event, a humanitarian
effort, environmental activism -- all is fine if its what you're inspired
to do.

The Open Studio Project is a community based art studio in Chicago where we
offer workshops using a process of art and writing for personal understanding,
community building and social change. It serves for many of us doing it as a
spiritual practice that anchors our work in the world in clarity and
coherence. We are a 501C3 non-profit, we accept donations but most of our
income comes from workshop fees and the sale of my book, Art is a Way of
Knowing (Shambhala, 1995). There are three of us who run the studio, all with
art therapy backgrounds but we have moved from a therapist-client paradigm to
a deep belief in community and mentoring so although we hold the space and
provide the process we also participate completely in the process as well
alongside our participants. We publish a quarterly newsletter which we hope to
get on-line but now is only by mail. If you have an interest, send me your
address and I'll send a sample copy. Our goal is not only to have people use
the process for self-understanding but to help them develop social
applications so that art and writing are made available in all sorts of places
in this manner which is extraordinarily freeing. We are engaged in some
research about how the process works with a psychologist, Dr. Paul Camic so
there is certainly an intellectual piece that interests us as well as the
experiential piece. I hope this isn't unclear, or too much info. Thanks for
asking,
Pat Allen

I have been working for 5 months on a business that is part of my
commitment of combining business and concern for the planet.

Coffee is the second largest commodity on the planet next to oil. It
employs 25,000,000 people worldwide, most of those being in Third World
countries. Like any other commodity it has also made its negative mark
on the world: Clearing valuable rain forests to grow more coffee; using
harmful pesticides; unhealthy preservatives added to extend shelf life,
etc.

When we formed Sterling Moon Specialty Coffees we knew we weren't going
to stop the consumption of coffee (nor did we want to), but one of our
goals was to clearly offer both high quality coffee that was
eco-friendly AND fresh roasted at our micro-roastery only upon receipt
of orders, preserving freshness only in a natural nitrogen flushed
vacuum bag. Well, we're finally there! We are the first exclusive
Internet coffee company offering 4 certified organic coffees, and over
50 shade grown coffees (not all of our coffees are, but the ones that
are are clearly identified on our site and in our brochure) enabling
coffee lovers to have a choice that keeps robust flavor in their cup
without sacrificing their values.

We invite you to our site to see for yourself. Make a statement and
still enjoy the finest coffee in the world - fresh roasted and delivered
to your door. Coffee with a choice:

I would like to request some help from anyone who can offer it. I am a physical therapy graduate student at Concordia University of Wisconsin. Our school is participating in a research project for our first three week clinical this January. The research has to do with sending four students to work under one clinical instructor. If anyone knows of a clinical P.T. instructor who would be qualified and willing to help please contact me. Location is not an issue. International would be nice with our groups first choice being Canada. Thank you for your time. Jeremy Normington jnorming@martin.cuw.edu

We provide advice and facilitate learning through meetings, >workshops and written materials.

We also deliver lots of highly participatory workshops to community groups. We can help people learn about all sorts of things from running meetings, taking minutes, making decisions and solving problems in groups, resolving disputes between neighbours and within communities, articulating building needs, interviewing future neighbours, planning to replace bits of ageing buildings, creating budgets, etc. > > * What is your role in the group? I am one of the project managers. I >also maintain a the raised bed (second storey) flower garden outside our >office, take photos of our work and sort of "specialize" in interpreting >architectural plans for people who have difficulty understanding how two >dimensional drawings actually reveal three dimensional spaces.

I am also more active in international connections as I spent a few years living in Korea, Philippines, Nigeria and Malaysia followed by time trying to bring "real" international issues to wider attention in my local community. By "real", I mean the widespread imposition of an economic system that I see as more destructive than helpful to our planet and the wonderous diverse cultures which people have created. I see other cultures in other spaces more as places to learn from than try to teach to! > > * Where does this group meet? Our >services and assistance are what we offer! The products of our labour, >buildings, are all owned by the groups we serve, not us. > > * What activities are you as a team available for? We are delighted to >work with existing community groups or help form such groups to pursue the >development of built structures which will be used by that group for >fulfilment of their purposes, provided of course that we are in agreement >with their purposes. People using our services do have to find a way to >pay us for this work however. (We are not eligible in Canada to be a >"charity" and raise funds via tax deductible donations. Given my >experience with bake sales, don't think I'd particularly want too either! >Think it is good that we are sort of self sufficient "floggers of skills".) > > * What are you as a team looking for? Think its safe to say that we all >only want to change the world! We try to contribute by assisting people to >take responsibility for creating sustainable communities where people live >in constructive relationships to our natural environment and each other. > > * How do you make decisions? As a group we practice consensus decision >making. While I am a bit of a proselytizer of this form, I work with and >struggle with accepting other forms used by other groups! > * How are you funded? By fees paid by the groups we work with as a necessary part of their building construction costs, just like architects or real estate agents, although our fees are considerably lower than either! > > * Is the group open to new members? Yes, in a peculiar way though! We are >a working group and share responsibility for bringing work to the >organization.
